G. J. Crook then made a sug-
gestion that o\.ing to , the large
crowd which would be in town c : n
the night of the speaking , the
opera house would be entirely to
small to accommodate , . them ,
and that there would be several
people who would come from a
distance to hear such noted men
and then would have to go away '
disappointed , he thought it
would be a good idea to have an
open air meeting hi thc court
house yard on thc south side of
the court house. This caused
some discussion and it was decided -
ed that as the club would have
another meeting before the 23rd
that no definite action be taken
until that time.
On motion the club adjourned
to meet at the court house again
next Tuesday evening , September
'
20 at S o'clock. It is earnestly
requested that members of the
club and all republicans who are
not members be 'present at this
meeting as there is , much busi-
ness of importance to be transact-
ed. Let everybody comc.

submitted to Judge Kelligar by
testimony taken in Auburn Thursday -
day relative to the value of prop-
erty , and the testimony of the
state officers taken in Lincoln
Saturday. This case wIll go to
the supreme court at once and
will be finally decided by that
court within the next thirty days

Bridge Contract.
The John Gilligan bridge Com-
pany didn't do a thing last week
but break the bridge combine in
Douglas County by securing the
contract for a two hundred foot
span bridge over the Elkhorn
ri\'er. The Omaha contingent
put up a hard fight and held the
matter up for several days but
the board eventually granted the
Gilligan contract. This is the
first time The Omaha bridge
companies have ever lost their
home con tract. _
1\'lr Gilligan and Dough
County are each entitled to con-
gratulations.
Commercial Club.
'rhe commercial club met at
the court house Monday evening
to formulate ways and means tv
secure better roads leading to
.
town.
A good attendance was present
and everybody was greatly in
earnest. It was ctetermin to
have a committee wait on thc
county board and secure what-
ever assistance is possible to this
end. 11'a118 City pays a , large
proportion of the county tax and
it is but right that it should re-
ceive a just proportion of the
'
road fund.
At the suggestion of J. E.
Leyda the club requested the com-
mittee to wait on all members
and collect the delinquent fces.
A club room will be rented and
kept open at all times. It was
further suggested that the drag
be used upon all bottom roads
and that the club co-operate in
the drainage plan for the purpose
of lessening the liability of over-
flow.
flow.n
n was finally determined that
the club meet in a body with the
county board ( in October and
agree upon some road improvement -
ment plan.
There can be no doubt but that
the county board will be fair with
Falls City and that thc cooperation -
tion of the board with the com-
mcrcial club will acheivc good re-
sults ,
Hon Joseph Cannon.
Considering the fact that Hon.
Joseph cannon speaker of the
lower house of congress is to ad-
dress the people of Falls , City
next Friday evening , a few incidents -
dents illustrative of his character
may not bc untimely.
There is no man in congress so
popular as hc. Hc is loved and
respected by democrats ? till re-

pUblicans a1ik . The ovation
given him ] by thc dcmocratic
membcrs at thc close of the last
session of congress was fully as -
warm and 1 enthusiastic as thc one
.
given by the republicans.
Shortly after his election as
speaker one of his Illinois friends
was asked for a description of
him. 1'he reply was substantially c
as follows : "A descrIption of
Uncle JoeV ll , imagine a luau '
who physically , mentally and
temperamentally is constl'utecl
on the lines of Abraham Lincoln ,
with a half serious , half humorous -
ous cast .of countenance , a pro-
nounccd twinkle : in his Cye , sit-
ting in an old fashioned rocking
chair with his angular legs cross-
ed 1 so' as to show about four inches
of white socks and an equal
length of bar leg and YOU have
Joe Cannon. There is probably
no man in America so like Abra-
ham Lincon as Joe Cannon. In
his common sense , in his great
sympathy he is a counter part.
He is utterly without convcn-
tionality. Hc docsn't believe in
formalities nor red tape. He
would give his salutation to the /
poorest lady in the land 1 with as
great dignity and respect as he
would show to a , queen.
It is not often that Falls City
gets to hear and see so distinguished -
guished an officer as thc speaker
of the lower house of congress ; it
has never had and probably never
again will have the opportunity
of seeing that character of man ,
now becoming so rare , as typified
by the immortal Lincoln. Joseph
Cannon' will speak in halls City ,
Friday evcning. Sept. : 23rd.
Colts Win as , Usual.
The score board looks l , good to
the local sports Sunday but how
could it bc otherwise , with
Ruegge who cali discount any
pitcher putting the ban over
home and Poteet , there with the
catching quality. Scores were
runt in by Foster , and Poteet.
Fode and Cornell did excellent
work at the bat while , Sears and
Shields tagged everything that
came their way. Heck and Pax-
ton' kept up their reputation easi-
ly and Craig lost out. Game by
innings.
