May early Monday morning , Dr. Hous- ton officiating. . Miss Gertrude Martin , who has been visiting her sister , Mrs. W. ' C. Ray , returned to her home in LaCygrte , Kansas. Irs. Edna Griffiths of Verdon was in the city the latter part of the week visiting at the home of her brother Grant Windle. R. R. Stewart of Verdon was in the city Saturday and called at this office where the enrolling clerk duly entered his name on the big book. Dr Caswell has arrangements - about complete for the open- ing of the Commercial hotel. The building has been remodled and the new interior decorations are very fine It will be run as a two dollar a day house and will be a credit to the city. There was an unusually large crowd in town Saturday and all the merchan ts were busy. Lhe heavy rain that began to fall about - bout four o'clock caught a number - er of farmers and their families still in town. A big electrical .storm visited this section during the night. There was a bril- liant display of lighting , but no material damage was reported. r Amputation Dr. Reneker , assisted by Dr. Houston and Dr ! Miner amputated - ed Samuel DifTenbaugh's left limb between the knee and the ankle last Saturday morning The operation was rendered necessary by an attack of gangrene. Although - though Mr. Diffenbaugh is eighty three years of age , he possesses such a strong constitution and such great vitality that he stood the operation as well as might a man of thirty. Confirmation. Bishop Wi11iamsof Omaha con- ducted services at St. Thomas church Sunday morning. At this service the bishop formally insti tuted Rev Henry B. Smith as rector of St. Thomas parish. Rev. Smith presented a class of five for confirmation. There was special music and the services were very impressive . Rev. Holly Given Reception. Rev and ll's. . . E. Holly were given a public reception by the members of the Christian church at the residence of J. R. Cain on Friday evening A large number of people took advantage of this opportunity to get better acquainted - quainted with Rev. and Mrs. Holly and to enjoy the entertainment - men t that was provided. Vocal and instrumental music were the especial features and very nice refreshments - freshments were served. - ' Arbor Day. Friday was Arbor day and the occasion was observed by the closing of the banks , the display of flags and by appropriate exer- cises in the various grades of the public schools.
