Our basket ban team has not been able to work yet on account of the poor condition of the groundR . The boys arc trying to get in shape to beat I-Iumboldt at base ban hursday. It promises to be an interesting : game. Elyin Barlow recently gave the school a collection of 40 books , for the school library. This makes a nice start and with what the school shan add a very credit- able showing will be made. Verdon School Notes. There are nine candidates for graduation this year from the high school. The , enrollment for the quarter just closed was 54 boys and 65 girls average attendance was 45 boys and 54 girls. Fire drills have been introduc- ed. In the last drill the pupils were all outof the building in less than one-half minute and were back to work again in less than another minute. James \Viltse closed a success- ful term of school in Dist. 27 , Friday , March 18th. . . . . . . . . - - . - , . . - --p- - - ' _ - _ _ d' . TAw . r . . . . Prof. S. A. Chidester , who was Prof. Funks predecessor at Ver- don , is now principal of the Ver- digre , Nebr. , schools. Dist. 31-A. L. Knisely teach- er.-School dosed March 25th. The pupils gave a program con- sisting of recitations , songs and ciphering. Work on the Kearney Normal school will begin within the next two months. The plans provide for a handsome structure which can be added' to from time to time without marring the general sym- metrical design. Sir Edwin Arnold-1832-1904- Noted poet , scholar and editor , died in London , March 24. His principal works are ; " 'The Indian Song of Songs , " "Indian Poetry" "Pearls of the Faith , " 'fhc Song Celestial , " " rhe Light of Asia" and "The Light of the"\V orld. " His masterpiece is "The Light of Asia. " State Supt. , V. W. Stetson , of Mainewhom several of our teachers - ers heard in Lincoln last summer is a leading candidate for the superintendency of the Omaha schools : Our own State Supt. Fowler is also a candidate. Also Dr. VL'olf principle of the Lincoln high school. This position pays salary of $3,600. Supt.
