The enemies of Congressman
Burkett have been seeking to
connect him in some way with
the post office scandals. Of course
they have failed to do so. Not
only has Congressman Burkett
proved his official integrity , but
he has proved his assailants 1 to
be the most miserable of 1iars.

The decision of the United
States supreme court in the
Northern Securities merger case
will mark an epoch in the history
of anti-trust legislation. It win
give the govenmen a firmer
footing in its future contentions
with unlawful monopoly. It will
inspire a more wholesome respect
for our anti-trust laws and win
have a good effect generally.

The mills of the gods grind
slowly , but somehow , somewhere
the grist of justice must be
ground. As we judge so shaH
we surely be judged. Wrong
may prevail for a day , but right
shaH endure for eternity. When
retribution comes we are likely to
imagine that we are unjustly pun-
ishcd and wonder why it is so ,
forgetting all the while that the
mills of the gods grind slowly.

p. JUST REBUKE.
The action of the republican
caucuses held in the three wards
of halls City on Tuesday night
was a just rebuke to that element
which has done so much to dis-
rupt the party , and so much to
further factional . strifc. The
success of the regular republican
ticket and the defeat of the lVlar-
tin-Kcim ticket was a splendid
expression ! of the sentiment of the
loyal republicans of this city and
a crushing blow to thc bolters
and obstructionists.
'Yhile the result would have
been the same in any event , the
great lands1ide was doubtless the
direct result of the attitude assumed -
sumed by the Journa1. The ma-
liciouS' attack on I\Ir. Abbey , 1\fr.
Lcekins and I\Ir. Lemmon served
to very forcibly call the attention
of the republicans to the real mo-
tivcs behind the assault. Here
are three men with a record for
good citizenship , high character
and unquestioned repubHcanism.
that might well be envied by any
one of the rang : that has assaulted -
'
ed them. It did not sound good
to the , majority of thc republicans
to hear these gentlemen , maligned

coming as it did from that source.
They realized that the Journal
is under complete democratic control -
trol ; that John Martin is official
court reporter for a democratic
judge and must , in the very na-
ture of things , make good to his
chief ; they realized that the power -
er of democratic millions dominate -
nate the policy of that paper ;
they realized that A. R. Keirn
had no intention of being a can-
didate for state auditor and that
his dcclared candidacy was simply
another stumbling block placed
in the path of the party. The
republicans of this city objected
.
to having their republicanism
controlled by long distance tele-
lihone from Auburn or by tele-
graph from CaJifornia. The opportunity -
portunity for them to speak came
when the ward caucuses were
held and the overwhelming defeat
of the vlartin-Kcim ticket and
the correspondingly great victory
of the rcgular. republican ; ticket
was a stinging rebuke to the democratic -
ocratic spies in the republican
ranks and settles as far as Falls
City is concerned , the status of
the renegades.
