Roosevelt Club Meeting.
The meeting of the Roosevelt
club on Monday evening was
1 quite well attended.tlhc most
important business transacted was
1 thc adoption of the by-l aws that
shaH govern thc organization
'Plle by-laws as reported by thc
committee were read by thc secre-
I tary and adopted after a few
slight changes had been madc.
' Considerable discussion arose
over thc limitation of member-
ship. trhc by-laws provided that
any republican living in Falls
City be eligible to mcmbership.
t Some suggested that the words
, Hand vicinity" bc added. : Chose
i 3 opposing thc change argued that
1 it was thc desirc of thc stat coma -
i 1 mittec that Roosevelt clubs be
organized in every prccinct and
I that thc admission of republicans
' from outside precincts to thc Falls
I' City club would have a tendency
! to discourage the organization of
clubs in those precincts. The
I
majoriix : took this view of thc
matter and the amendmcnt was
J defeated. Many were present
. who had not yet signed the roll
and they took advantage of this
I chance to do so. The club adjourned -
journed to meet at the court
! house at eight o'clok ( p. m , ! vIon-

Fire Narrowly Averted
I The building occupied by Bea u-
\ licus news stand had a narrow
escape from dcstruction by fire
Saturday morning' Harnack's
Military band uses one of thc
rooms up stairs for rehersals and
f had provided several boxes filled
with sawdust to be used as cuspi-
dors. A rehersal was held li'ri-
day cvening' and somebody evi-
dcntly dropped a lighted cigar
stump into one of these boxes and
came near causing a serious con-
. conf1agation. Mr. : Avon who
also occupies a room up
stairs was awakened about three
o'clock Saturday morning by the
smell of smokc. Hc investigated
. but was unable to locate thc fire.
Hc then went down stairs and
found Night Officer Cam blin and
thc two madc an inspection of
thc building. They forced open
thc door of thc band room and a
volume of smoke issued forth.
Further investigation showed a
big hole burned in thc floor. The
flames were easily extinguished
but in a few momcntswould have
dc'cloped into a very serious fire
; i and considering thc location of
thc building it is hard to tell
p where thc conflagation . would
: have cndcd.

Conditions in Zion.
John G. ' :
Speichcr , o\'crscer-n-
charge at Zion City during the
absence of Dr. Dowic , devotes
considerable space in thc current
issue of Leaves of Healing , to dc-
nyin ' reports to thc effect that
sickness , want and dissatisfaction -
tion arc prevalent in lion Press
reports have announced that work
is scarce in Zion City , that wages
have been reduced , that many
families are moving away and
that there arc many cases of
whooping cough and pncumonia.
All these things 1\11' Speichcr vehemently -
hcmcntly denys and challenges
inrcs tiga tion. It is evident from
his utterances that there had
been gross exaggeration of ad-
verse conditions , and accepting
his statements as true thc health
and prosperity and contentment
of thc people of Zion must be
above the average in other parts
of thc country.
A Bold Thief.
o.n last Saturday a thief entered -
cd thc cloak department of J. S.
Johnston & Sons' store and when
discovered by Clydc Johnston ,
made a hasty departure taking
with him several garments from
thc stock. 1\11' Johnston got a
good view of thc thief but ' lid
not recogizc him as anybody hc
lutcw. No trace whatever has
been found of thc robber.
