Looking to County Library
In addition to the disposition
of the regular routine business of
the city library at tlieir regular
meeting Monday evening the
matter of the establishment of a
county library was discussed at
some length by the local board
This is an ideal matter and it is
the opinion of the board that
should more favorable crops be
our portion this year that the
project might another year be
carried out successfully The
matter of course being a sub
ject for taxation would have
to be submitted to the vote
of the people for their ap
proval Where the plan has
been intelligently and actively
carried into execution it has bei n
a success and no doubt could be
made a success in Red Will w
county Let us talk up the plan
in the meantime and be prepared
to act intelligently and favorably
when the financial times seem to
ibe more propitious

CANDIDACY
GF
Franklin C Hamer
To have made a success of ones
business and to have builded that
business through tireless effort
hacked by fair dealing and a desire to
be of service is a record of which any
man may be proud 9uch is the rec
ord of Franklin C Hamer who is a
candidate for the republican nomina
tion for state treasurer Mr Hamer
is a -Nebraska born product and the
son of the late Dr E P Hamer one of
Nebraskas early pioneers He was
born in Lancaster county and all of
his life his energies have been devoted
to building up in his native state a
record for business integrity and abil
ity After finishing the public schools
of Lancaster county Mr Hamer ent
ered business for Himself selecting
the field of investment banking as the
field of his efforts In the meantime
however he continued to devote a
goodly portion of his time to practical
farming He has land interests in
Lancaster Holt nd Lincoln counties
and to the cultivation of these lands
he gives direct personal attention in
the way of supervision and advice
Mr Hamer is a graduate of the Uni
versity of Nebraska and because of
his connection with agriculture he is
unusually well posted as to the needs
and requirercentr of the farmers of
Nebraska
For several years Mr Hamer has
been prominently identified with the
American Safe Deposit Co of Omaha
This company is trustee to the amount
of millions of dollars yearly and- it
numbers among its patrons hundreds
of Omahas wage earners who know
that their earnings are safe in the
okarge of this concern and who have
learned by experience that its advice
upon tho matter of their small invest
ments is always sound Many a work
ingman in Omaha has been advised by
this concern and following the advice
has so invested his weekly savihg3 as
to enable him to purchase his own
comfcrtrble home or buy securities
that bring a welcome addition to the
pay envelope every coupon clipping
day
Because of his long application to
the investment banking business Mr
Kamer is in close touch with all the
reliable and secure investment offer
ing a faet that particularly well fits
him for the position of fiscal agent of
thestate
Nebraska has now upwards of 9
OJO000 invested in Interest bearing
securities and is constantly purchas

ing more Mr Hamer believes these
securities should be purchased direct
from the municipalities and school
districts and avoid paying large com
missions and premiums to brokers
Few people realize the immense
amount of responsibility devolving
upon the state treasurer of Nebraska
He is the custodian of the funds of
the state Every biennium the state
treasurer receives and pays out ap
proximately 5000000 In addition to
the mere handling of this money he is
charged with keeping an accurate ac
count of scores of different funds He
is the fiscal agent of the state in all of
its investment transactions and these
mount up to millions of doHars every
year As fast as securities held by
the state mature they must be rein
vested and it requires a thorough
knowledge of law of the financial
standing of states and counties ana
municipalities of the condition of the
money market in short it requires
financial ability of a unusually high
order This ability Mr Hamer pos
sesses to an admittedly high degree
as his success in his business amply
testifies
Nebraska is a comparatively young
state It is only forty five years old
hence it is just beginning to have op
portunities to elect native born sons
to important offices Mr Hamer is
one cf these native sons and of
siCh as he Nebraska has a right to
be proud When one of Nebraskas
sons makes good Nebraska should
fact
Mr Hamer is not asking for the
nomination for state treasurer on tho
ground of party service although he
has been a consistent republican all
his life He is asking for the nomina
tion on the ground that he is able and
willingjao give the taxpayers a cafi
profitable and conservative manage
ment of their financial affairs as citi
zens of this commonwealth
He is making an active though dig
nified campaign for the nomination
meeting as many people as possible
and telling them frankly and openly
just what he knows about business
affairs and just what he will en
deavor to do if honored by his party
with the nomination and by a major
ity of the voters with an election
Socially he is a gentleman whom it
is a pleasure to meet As a business
man he inspires confidence in those
who have dealings with him As a
citizen he is enterprising and progres
sive Measured by any standard of
ethics Mr Hamer is a credit to the
state tht reared him
