The Rising Sugar Bill
Progress in reducing the high
cost of living continues to go
backward rather than forward
Sugar now joins cereal and meat
products in a renewed upward
movement It has risen more
than two cents a pound and this
country is an enormous consumer
of sugar We make up only
about 6 per cent of the earths
population and use more than 20
per cent of its commercial sugar
production Our sugar
iotn amounts annually to some
7360000000 pounds and an ad
vance of no more than two cents
a pound accordingly adds nearly
160000000 to our yearly sugar
bill Thus from this cause alone
the cost of maintaining the aver
age family has been increased
fully 750 a year Springfield

ONE OP THE NEW AFTER
NOON COATS
The fall and winter fashions are

and the long separate coats
will remain in favor on account
of their usefulness
The reversible cloakings are
perhaps the most used for the
full length coats but this is prob
ably due to the variety of styles
and weights shown in the double
faced cloths There are some very
attractive satins which make up
effectively for evenings and
those Avith black on one side and
a light color on the other are
really economical as the black
side may be used for street wear
and the other side for more
dressy occasions
For developing a double faced
satin the accompanying design is
most appropriate It is made
with the popular Directoire col
lar which may form a hood or
sailor or pointed collar in the
back and with the lower front
edges in straight or rounded out
line
In one of the shops an attrac
tive coat was seen with a collar
braided in rather wide soutache
braid The effect was that of a
stripde satin but really was made
of two colors of braid running in
parallel rows the width of the col
lar This idea could be applied
effectively on the coat illustrat
ed here if a black satin were us
ed and black and white soutache
braid for the collar
