A change has been made in the
location of the - Interstate High
way through this county between
ouibertson and Palisade taking
in to the divide about five miles
north of town from the French
man valley This route has some
bad canyons to cross and Ave be
lieve that a much better route
could be had by coming through
Trenton and Stratton and then
taking the divide road to Waune
ta The commissioners say that if
this route is selected it would be
put in good condition as soon as
possible It would pass through
and benefit the three principal
towns of the county and very lit
tle objection would be made to
use of county funds for its im
provement Right now is the pro
per time to agitate tliis little
change in the route as it must
be made sooner or later and
while the agitation is in progress
let the extra work on the road be
pushed ahead Good roads are
one of the assets of any commun
ity and our commissioners are
willing and anxious that the big
road through Hitchcock county
will equal any road in the state

THE OLD SETTLERS PICNIC
The day was pleasant and while
there were not so many present
as on some former occasions it
was one of the most enjoyable of
the picnics The meeting and
greetings of old friends and ac
quaintances were cordial and
heartfelt and soon a bounteous
dinner was spread and enjoyed
as open air dinners are enjoyed
After dinner the proceedings
were opened by prayer by Rev
MeBride followed by singing by
a quartette composed of Mr and
Mrs Calvin Mrs Iladley and Mr
McCool Mr MeBride made a
speech more music a speech by
Mr Perry music then Mr Cor
deal gave an interesting epitome
of the history of Red Willow
county with extracts of a dairy
kept by Royal Buck on the ex
pedition of the founders of the
county in 1871 And just here
it may be allowable to mention a
subject of interest in connection
with naming the town and count
ofl which Mr Buck writes in his
daily In discussing the matter
the shape of the counties farth
er east being square and one lead
ing town as Clay Center York
Center etc it was considered
more expedient to have this new
county longer than wide in or-

The fire department Saturday
evening about 530 ans wered a
call to the McCook Greenhouse
No buildings were burned but
seven tons of hay were burned
and damaged A small boy and
a match furnished the cause
