DAVID HAWKSWORTH DEAD
A Valued Employe of Burlingtoi
ton for Forty Years
David Hawksworth died in
Plattsmouth Friday last of ail
ments incident to old age Born
in England in 1831 he was in his
81st year
Before coming to America he
was ia machinist in the employ of
the Manchester Southern Liv
erpool Railway Co He came to
America in 1849 and entered the
Q service at Burlington Iowa in
1859 In 1862 he enlisted in the
navy and served on the gunboat
Indianola was captured below
Vicksburg in 1863 He was re
leased after three months im
prisonment and served as assist
ant engineer on the gunboat Mar
mora until mustered out in 1S64
Returning home Mr Hawks
worth became general foreman
for the Q at Burlington Came tc
Nebraska in 1875 and was made
master mechanic of lines west of
the Missouri river In 1888 he be
came superintendent of motive
power serving until 1901 when
he retired from the companys
service
Mr Hawksworth was promi
nent in Plattmsouth for many
years Was a large shareholder
and director in the First Nation
al bank He served as county
commissioner for three years and
declined a second term
Mr Hawksworth was married
in 1863 at Burlington to Miss
Kate Sehaefer His widow and
four sons and one daughter sur
vive The sons are Frank of Lin
coln Joe of Fort Madison la
Dave of Detroit Mich and Fred
of Plattsmouth His daughter is
Mrs E W Cook of Plattsmouth
The funeral was held in Plats
moth Sunday many prominent
Burlington officials and employ
es attending the services and pay
ing a tribute of respect to the
memory of one of the old sruard

Thursday from his mountain trip
and resumed his desk on Monday

State Bought the Bonds
Under the direction of Mayor
McAdams City Attorney Wolff
has been corresponding with the
state treasurer with a view to
obtaining a reduction of interest
oni the 20000 water bonds in
case same were sold Friday at
the mayors direction the city at
torney wrote accepting the state
treasurers offer to take the
bonds at a reduction from 6 per
cent to 5 per cent until expira
tion of optional period Last
night the council ordered the sale
and ratified the action of the
mayor and city attorney This
morning the remittance was re
ceived The funds have been bad
ly needed to replace a boiler
which has been in such a danger
our condition that the casualty
insurance thereon has been can
celed
