I am for LaFollette lie repre
sents the highest standard of pro
gressive statesmanship In the
fight that has been going on for
the last tAVO or three years much
has been accomplished toward
the overthrow of political control
by the machine the political boss
and the trusts and combinations
The next logical step in this
movement would be the nomina
tion and election of a true pro
gressive as president of the Unit
ed States
La Follette lias always stood in
the front rank in his desperate
struggle against favored interests
and in behalf of the people His
honesty is undisputed his abil
ity is unquestioned his courage
is acknowledged by all For many
years he has been the leader in
FIRST IN PEACE
When the platform promulgated
by Nebraska republicans for the
imnendincr campaign listed Presi
dent Tafts services in behalf of
world peace first among the laud
able achievements of his adminis
tration it struck a real keynote
Whatever differences of opinion
may exist about other activities
of the president since he entered
the White House and it would 1
foolish to deny or belittle these
differences there is practically
universal agreement on the not
able advance step marked by the
arbitration treaties which he has
negotiated and which are awaitt
ing ratification by the senate

of high statesmanship and suc
cessful accomplishment where oth
ers have failed to move or have
the war against Special Interests
and in favor of the establishment
and vindication of the rights of
the common citizen His nomina
tion and election would be the
greatest victory that could possi
bly be achieved in favor of pro
gressive honest government
If all the voters who have con
fidence in the intelligence of the
people and believe in the prin
ciples for which he has struggled
would unite and come to his re
lief in this crisis he would be
nominated and elected by an ov
erwhelming majority
I hope he will win but win or
lose I am for him because his
success means a victory for the
people and his defeat means a
continuation of machine control
in national politics

ed that he will appeal to the peo
ple from any persistent attempt
on the part of the senate to hold
up the arbitration treaties
Should it come to this there can
be no serious question as to what
the outcome will be Public senti
ment in this country was never
so strong for practical peace
measures as it is right now and
never have the people generally
been so impressed with the need
lessness of most of our costly
wars President Taft may count
on a hearty response to his advo
cacy of the peaceful settlement of
all disputes between nations He
is conspicuously first in peace
and for what he has done has
first claim on the support of all
who love peace and hate war

While the itinerary is not yet
definite it is now fairly assured
that President Taft will visit
Omaha on his forthcoming west
ern tour
This consideration for Omaha
on the part of the president
should be duly appreciated by
our people and a fitting recep
tion prepared for the chief mag
istrate oC the nation
Omaha has been favored on scv
cral occasions by Mr Taft in Ins
travels both before and since he
became president The last time
he was the citys guest came in
the face of unfortunate condition
at the start of a disturbing street
car strike and as a consequence
we were decidedly handicapped
in according him the attention to
which the president was entitled
The next visit should enable us
to put up a better appearance
and leave a better impression on
both sides
The coming of the president
will give Omaha an opportunity
to demonstrate its high qualifica
tions to act as host and it should
not fail to enhance its reputation

and rainfall in Nebraska assure
the state an outcome for the crop
season that is well nigh miracu
lously favorable concerning the
summers history It seems hard
ly possible in view of the remark
able June and July drouth that
anj thing like a normal corn crop
can be harvested yet reports of
travelers throughout the state are
to the effect that this is not only
possible but in view of recent
weather altogether probable
With August rains helping out
feed supply b way of fall pas
tures and late cuttings of hay
three major crop 1 wheat corn
and forage are assuredly large
enough to carry the state in com
fort With general crop shortage
holding prices stiff Nebraska
bids fair to be one of the pros
perity centers of the country the
