The 1905 Tieup Recalled
The tieup of traffic on the St
Francis line of the Burlington in
western Kansas because of recent
floods has not been remedied al
though efforts are being made
to reopen the line as soon as pos
sible The first trouble occurred
one Aveek ago last Wednesday
night and this was followed by
two other floods within five days
This long failure of through
ersvice on this branch recalls an
other interruption of traffic out
that way from a different cause
that was fully as serious Sever
al years ago in the month of
March a rain set in Soon after
it began to snow Rain snow and
sleet alternated ending with
considerable fall of snow Then
the whole mass froze hard In
some places in cuts the mixture
of snow and moisture covered the
tracks several inches When it
froze no snow plow ever made
would clear the way It was nec
essary to dig it away from the
rails for miles with picks That
was necessarily slow work and
line remained out of service -for
