Hitchcock Chase and Perkins counties I The wets won the day in Texas in the election this week While it was quite an even break the result indicates that the time is not ripe for prohibition in Tex as It takes a good working ma jority to make effective legisla iotn of this nature The result however indicates a marvelous temperance awakening in that great state J It adds somewhat to the in terest of the Lorimer inquiry of which however the country is growing sick to learn that Sen ator Penrose regards Mr Hines the lumber mandate as a pat riot Exactly what kind of a patriot Mr Hines has been is likely to receive further demon stration It is also possible that Senator Penroses conception of a patriot is peculiar and distinc tive Springfield Republican NORRIS IN RACE FIFTH DISTRICT CONGRESSMAN TO SEEK SENATE SEAT ADMITS HE IS A CANDIDATE FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT ON RETURN HONE HIS No Surprise To Senator Brown and Both Men to Make Thorough Campaign Embarresses Progressive League Washington July 26 Spe cial Representative George W Norris will be a candidate for the United States senate to succeed Senator Norris Brown Represen tative Norris made this defi nite statement today to the correspondent of the State Jour nal in response to a direct ques tion as to his plans for the fu ture lie will not issue a for mal statement at this time an nouncing his candidacy but may do so shortly after his return home at the adjournment of con gross The determination of Mr Norris to seek the seat of Sen ator Brown in the senate means will either leave the house for the upper branch of congress or retire to private life lie is will ing it is understood to allow some other man in his district seek the congressional nomination Representative Norris an nouncement that he would run for the senate caused no surprise among insurgent republicans in Washington They have been ex pecting it for some time Even Senator Brown expressed no sur prise when informed that Mr Norris had finally made up his mind to run against him Both Senator Brown and Rep resentative Norris recognize that they differ on enough important subjects to make it necessary to cover every section of the state Senator Brown has already made his plans for an extensive cam paign He will readjust these slightly as result of the Norris statement today and will make them more elaborate than ever Mr Norris will lose no time in starting his campaign after he reaches Nebraska From statements made by both men it is apparent that the re publican candidate for the pres idency and Canadian reciprocity will be the two most important issues to be fought out by the senatorial candidates Senator Brown refuses to commit himself to any candidate at this time on the ground that the primary law gives the voter an opportunity to express his choice and that fol ium to declare for any particular candidate would be an attempt at dictation His known friendli ness for President Taft however places him at odds with Norris who is not only an ardent sup porter of Senator La Follette for the presidency but is determined to make Taft and LaFollette one of the issues of his campaign thus making Senator Brown take sides The two men are likewise op posed on Canadian reciprocity Brown having voted for it and i orris voted ngaiost it twi j in the house Tlio action of the Red Willow county convention in en dorsing Norris for the United States senate and La Follette for the presidency is largely respon sible for the determination of Norris to get into the senatorial race He said today that he could not afford to ignore the prefer ence of his home county Lin coln Journal The famous reciprocity bill with Canada is now an assured fact so far as the United States is concerned President Taft signed the bill
