Whetstone agency binder date of January 17 1870 says Since my letter of last week I have had a talk with Pawnee Killer and gained the following facts con cerning the massacre of a surveying party near the Republican river some time ago The village of Pawnee Killer and Wketstone was crossing the ridge im mediately south of the mouth of Red Willow Creek intending to camp on Beaver creek ten miles distant when they discovered a party of six white men Tvith a team or teams A charg made in which -three was at once rare killed The whites gained creek where the timber on Beaver Search was instituted in the fall ter to forward this relic which is of 1869 for some trace of the bodies herewith enclosed and know that but without success The Nebraska the savage who killed her brother ing pension in a tree is the Sioux ihode The issue of November 11 1869 con- of sepulture tains the following account of the re sult of the quest Mr Willard P Buck son of the missing surveyor arrived in the city yesterday from a trip to the west in search of his father and comrades Col Emery is mistaken when he says Warren was the name of one member of the iBuck party as no one of that name is mentioned in any list of the killed but the finding of the bodies of the three Indians is He found two or three wagons on corroboration of the other accounts Beaver creek a branch of the of the number of savages who were lican river One of them had been cut to pieces and portions of it thrown into the stream He also found some scraps of paper with writing on which belonged to his father one being a part of a bill of goods from Clark Plummer in this city He also found two tripods belong ing to the party which he recognized immediately The place where these things were found gave evidence of being either a camp or where the party had made a stand against the Indians No trace of the bodies was iiMlifaMJftJ Tte killed In the report of the Surveyor Gen eral of Nebraska dated August 31 1871 to the secretary of the interior i3 found the following The work of 1869 though so near ly coinpleted and so rigidly held with in the limits and the restrictions of the United States laws the survey ing manual and supplement and care fully drawn special instructions has not been without disaster and loss of life of some who were tempted by the liberal compensation allowed by OF - S7423k j B H E F upon the beautiful plains of Nebraska and for poor Nelson Buck who had left behind in Illinois his genial family and peaceful fireside there was no primrose path of dalliance and ease but a merciless death from an insid ious foe and such cases cause re gret that the military arm is not long enough to prevent their recurrence Mr Buck and his party viz J L Logan J C Haldeman F C Mc Farland J R Nettleton W McCul loh J V Brown Linden L Crocker Stanley Meecham H L Levi and James Wolteman were all killed by the Indians wnile on the Beaver a tributary of the Republican near his district of survey embraced in his contract No 22 Of the men named above J R Nettleton is known to have left th party before the massacre in com pany with H B McGregor and was lot of course killed but nothin has been heard or seen of the others from the day of their disappearance up until now No notice of the murder of these men was taken by the government other than by the introduction in the United States senate by Senator Thayer of a resolution calling for an official investigation but the matter seems to have ended there and so far as can be ascertained the cul prits were not made to suffer for their Mr and Mrs Longnecker with Mrs Ashmore spent Wednesday with Mr and Mrs Keyesin their beauti ful home in Indianola Some of the wheat fields have been put into corn which will not amount to anything
