INSURGENTS TO STAND BY TAFT
Attitude of Cummins One of Big Sur
prises Line of Division Be
tween Brown and Norris
Plainly Marked
Washington Demoralization among
the insurgents is complete following
the discovery that Senator Cummins of
Iowa has determined to cast his lot
with President Taft for another nom
ination as against Senator La Fol
lette When La Follettes friends be
gan to count noses in the senate they
found that they were few in numbers
The only senators who could definitely
he counted upon to stand by LaFol
lette to the end and carry their fight
for him to the floor of the next repub
lican national convention were Bourne
of Oregon Pointexter of Washington
Bristow of Kansas and Clapp of Min
nesota There is some doubt about
Works of California that senator not
having made his position clear as yet
Senator Brown of Nebraska together
with eight other insurgents has de
cided to line up for Taft in 1912 This
break in insurgent ranks is disconcert
ing to LaFollettes friends
It is taken for granted here that
Representative Norris will be a candi
date against Senator Brown in Ne
braska Mr Norris has voted against
Canadian reciprocity Senator Brown
will vote for the measure in the sen
ate Norris is not only vice president
of the progressive league but one of
LaFollettes most ardent boomers and
among the insurgents in the house
J who are unalterably opposed to an-
other nomination otTaft Senator
Brown is for Taft for another term
The two men therefore will have at
least two very important issues as sub
jects for debate in their primary con
test

ilXTY THREE KILLI
EARTHQUAKE IN EARLY MORN
ING IN MEXICO CITY
PROPERTY LOSS IS HEAVY
Caught Beneath the Falling Walls of
the Artillery Barracks Most
Serious Shock in a
Score of Years
Mexico City Sixty three killed
Eeventy five wounded property loss
100000
These are the net results of an
earthquake which rent the capital en
Wednesday morning and injected a
note of tragedy into what was to have
been a day of unalloyed rejoicing
When the work of searching the ruins
is completed it is possible that the
list of dead will be lengthened some
what as hiding throughout the city
there doubtless are many wounded
who with traditional fear of the au
thorities and government hospitals
are anxious to evade discovery The
property loss is an estimate based
upon calculations made by owners
and contractors Little of the loss is
covered by insurance
It was 43C a m when the first
shock was felt According to the
meteorological observatory the great
est intensity was reached at the end
of the first minute but the instru
ments continued to record the shocks
for fourteen minutes more
Although the shock was felt in all
parts of the city few realized the
magnitude of the catastrophe until
late in the forenoon due to the fact
that the casualties were confined to
a comparatively small area Accus
tomed as the residents are to earth
quake shocks and to their harraless
ness on former occasions they were
slow to learn that this was the most
serious shock in a score of years
Bonds to Bring a Premium
Washington Treasury officials are
convinced that hen the time comes
to receive bids on the new iBsue of
50000000 Panama bonds at 3 per
cent there will not be the slightest
difficulty in getting a good premium
They will be disappointed if the bids
are not considerably above par and
this despite the fact that these bonds
will be unique among those issued
since the civil war in that they will
not be usable as the basis of circula
tion

DEBATE WILL BEGIN AT ONCE
Democratic Majority in House Offers
It as a Wholesome Measure
Republicans Designate It
Petty Politics
Washington The long expected
wool tariff revision bill was introduced
in the house of representatives Tues
day by Chairman Underwood of the
ways and means committee and de
bate on it will begin in earnest The
measure was accompanied by a lengthy
report from the democrats in its favor
while the republican members headed
by Representative Payne of New York
unanimously reported against it In
dications are that the passage of the
bill will be stubbornly contested but
no intimation had been given as to the
time to be granted for debate Quot
ing President Tafts addresses after
the passage of the Payne Aldrich bill
in which he declared the woolen
schedule is indefensible and I propose
to say so the report says
Had the president made these pub
lic utterances earlier while the tariff
of 1909 was under consideration by
congress his declaration would have
been of real service to the people and
would have enabled them to protest
against the betrayal of the public wel
fare to private greed The presidents
silence at that time and his approval
of the act of 1909 makes it impossible
for him to evade his full share of re
sponsibility for the failure of re
vision which he now admits
The report deals at some length
with the attitude of the administra
tion in not communicating to congress
data on the steel trust and other in
dustries now being Investigated and
the failure of the tariff board to com
municate data on the woolen Industry
France to Tighten Bonds
Paris The succession of fetes and
dedications in America in honor of
France and Frenchmen culminating
in the unveiling at Washington May
22 of a memorial to Major Pierre
Charles lEnfant the French engineer
are now being followed up by leading
articles in various French journals
emphasizing the warmth of the friend
ship between the United States and
France

is reached in the hearing of similar

Taft to Stop at Lincoln
Washington President Taft ha3
practically promised to stop at Lin

dent said he would be glad to stop off
in Nebraskas capital So far as he
can see now he will be able to accept

Trouble Ahead for Mexico
Washington A pessimistic view of
the Mexican situation is taken in high
official and diplomatic quarters here
In spite of the resignation of Diaz and
the issue of a call for a new election
those who know most about the in
wardness of things in Mexico still in
sist that dark clouds of trouble are
lowering over the republic and that
the end of difficulty is far from being
reached In fact there is a strong
disposition here to believe that Mex
ico is merely at the beginning of her
troubles and that what will follow will
be much worse than that which has
gone before
Coronation Will Be Expensive
London The cost of the coronation
of King George June 22 is going to be
so great that there is really no way
of arriving at an accurate estimate

defray the governments expenses
This is 301000 more than was spent
