SLOAN AND KINKAID HAVE TAR
IFF SUGGESTIONS
Washington Convinced that the
farmers free list bill contains many
provisions which would be injurious to
the farmers and which would go a
long way to nullify the beneficial ef
fects of its other provisions Repre
sentatives Sloan and Kinkaid of Ne
braska are making an attempt to
bring before the house a number of
bills that they believe will bring about
the desired results free from the evils
embodied in the pending legislation
With the hope that these bills shall
be reported out of the committee and
with a view to fight for their passage
Mr Sloan and Mr Kinkaid will oppose
the democratic measure To this end
Mr Sloan has introduced four bills
One calls for all timber and lumber to
be put on the free list one for sewing
machines and all parts thereof an
other for boots and shoes harness
saddles and saddlery and the last for
salt
All these said Mr Sloan are ab
solute necessities to the farmers Free
lumber free shoes and salt and sew
ing machines will be a blessing to the
agricultural districts So are some
other articles which will be coxered
by the bills that Mr Kinkaid will in
troduce and we shall fight for them
But we feel that free cereals and free
meats would be injurious so injurious
indeed that we do not feel we could
conscientiously vote for the present
bill and do justice to our constituents
We shall do our best to have these
bills reported favorably and on the
hope of their success fight to the last
at the misnamed farmers free list
which the democrats are offering
In a day or two Mr Kinkaid will
introduce a bill fcr free farming in
plements and probably one for free
fencing wire Tnesa will complete the
batch of independent bills which these
Nebraskans will endeavor to replace
for the measure now before the house
Mr Norris does not believe that the
scheme is practical They can never
get the bills reported he said so I
shall try to accomplish the ends by
amendments to the democratic meas
ure If these fail I shall vote for the
bill as it stands for I think it is bet
ter than nothing

McCook Greets Board
money in developing this rather un
friendly part of Nebraska They have
been unaided by state or federal gov
ernments That they have succeed
cu to the measure you have gentlt
men noted in your recent travels
during your visit is a monument to
tht energy and never die purpose of
this people
We have now come to a point
where we hope for a reversal of the
rule To him that hath shall be giv
en and from him that hath not shall
be taken that he hath which has
bereft us of state institutions of
any character
The location of this school is not
an action for today but one involving
the years and one of largest moment
to us of Southwestern Nebraska
It is within easy vision of proph
ecy to expect that this agricultural
school will in no distant date include
in its curriculum together with agri
culture and stock raising those
natural and logical requirements of
the farm a practical business course
manual training and domestic science
normal training and academic work
With this probability in view the
necessity of locating the school well
out in the district is obvious when
the nearness of Kearney and its big
school is considered
Now in conclusion I wish to refer
to one more asset and may I be par
doned if my enthusiasm goes out of
bounds somewhat
My final word concerns McCook it
self
Just a little lacking thirty years
ago I followed the star of empire
westward to McCook then just begin
ning to feel the throbs and impulses
which have since developed into a
bustling little city of 4000 energetic
souls So busy indeed have this peo
ple been that they have foregone ha
los Psalm singing and backbiting
their neighbors somewhat in their
efforts to develop the country and
make for themselves homes
However under adverse circum
stances here in a quarter century
has been evolved a thoroughly mod
ern city with water works sewer sys
tem electric and gas lighting sys
tems a public school system build
ings and equipment not excelled in
Nebraska an opera house only equall
ed in Omaha and Lincoln a public li
brary city park in fine all the ad
vantages of an up-to-the-minute city
an accomplishment seldom duplicat
ed in older and more friendly coun
tries in longer years
Here is a city made to hand af
fording advantage It invites
the Nebraska Agricultural School to
its neighborhood pledging it patriotic
support to the end of days
I make this plea gentlemen not
alone and selfishly for McCook but
we offer you petitions and personal
letters and iewspaper clippings from
not only this entire southwestern part
oZ Nebraska but from all over the
state for newspapers and men of in
fluence al over Nebraska unite with
us in The contention that McCook is
the logical and proper location for
this school
But especially Southwestern Ne
braska looks to this board for a de
cision in favor of McCook
This is the first opportunity the
Board of Public Lands and Buildings
or the state government has had to
recognize the metropolis of South
western Nebraska and as we have
a most meritorious case and as we
feel we are in the hands of a fair ani
discriminating board of just men de
siring only to do the best for South
western Nebraska we offer our
claims with confidence the utmost
confidence believing the situation
and facts warrant such a determina
tion by this board believing that
such action will rebound to the best
interests of this section of Nebras
ka and that future results will ful
ly prove this claim and justify this
board in a decision in our favor

petitions gathered by McCook bcoct
ers from all over this section of the
state
He spoke in part as follows
PETITIONERS
We have just heard from the pub
licity committee the facts and reason
which convince us that MoCook is th
location which best answers the pur
pose contemplated by the legislators
who passed the bill for the estab
lishment of an agricultural school
in S W Nebraska This is no mere
local sonMment It is the opinion of
the great majority of those whose
benefit the ccbocl s intc 1 Ttn
list of jpetitiens which I am request
ed to presort rou io pre f of this
statement The petitions bear the
signatures cf 3592 citizens They
comprise 14 counties and 64 towns
In regard -to the petitions from Ox
ford and Cambridge I wish to ex
plain that they are conditional and
not quite so numerous as othera from
other towns and the reason is that
both these places have hope of se
curing for themselves the agricultural
school naturally they are averse to
injuring their own chances by recom
mending another location But the
citizens of both Cambridge and Oxford
have stated emphatically that their
second choice is McCook that had
they no prospect of the school for
themselves they would be as earnest
and enthusiastic in their efforts to
secure a decision in favor of McfCook
as the citizens of McCook themselves
because they believe that the greatesl
advantage to the greatest number
could be derived from this location
The other towns from Cambridge
to the western boundary have put
forward no claims of their own be
cause they look to McCook as the fit
ting and proper place for the experi
ment to be tried out They feel that
the progress and prosperity of Mc
Cook -and its surrounding territory
mean the progress and prosperity of
S W Nebraska They realize that
every problem that confronts the
farmer is presented here and also
that the means for solving their prob
lems can be furnished in greater
abundunce and with niJiv facility in
MCook than in am otner place with
in the territory
The agricultural schoo1 of S W
Nebraska is a new experiment a
venture to some extent Problems
are presented here whieh so far have
baffled the ingenuity of man If
morn skill experience and training
can do anything to make this most
fertile soil on earth productive it
will be recorded as one of the
achievements of the age one of mans
great conquests of nature An ex
periment so momentous so far-reaching
should have a fair and favorable
trial and it is the opinion of the pe
titioners that McCook offers a field
of difficulties to be conquered and
means to aid in the conquest greater
than can be found in any other part
of S W Nebraska
The petitioners request you there
fore gentlemen of the Board of Pub
lic Lands and Buildings when you
come to render your important decis
ion to not only bear in mind the nat
ural advantages of McCook but also
to take into consideration the extent
of territory and the number of inhab
itants who will rejoice at your decis
ion if yoa decide to place the agri
cultural school in the vicinity of Mc
Cook
Following this more formal presen
tation were short talks from gentle
men from various parts of the dist-
L Morse spoke for Dundy county
indicating what splendid results in
wheat raising alone had been accom
plished in his neighborhood by sum
mer fallowing and prophecying what
might be done by a general use of
scientific farming
C C Vennum of Stratton made a
hit by espousing the position that
Southwestern Nebraska needs but
scientific knowledge and experimenta
tion cf an agricultural school teach
ing water conservation and soil cul
ture according to our conditions to
make this a garden spot and make it
return to the state the greatest inter
est on its investment in a school
W A McCool and E S Hill both
of Indianola gave short talks on pi
oneer days in Red Willow county
besides incidentally boosting strongly
for McCook for the agricultural
school With some of pathos there
was always a strong sense of humor
in both of their talks
C W Meeker of Imperial made
one of the strong pleas of the eve
ning among the out-of-town people foi
McCook urging the board to a tardy
recognition of the merits of South
western Nebraska by locating this
school at McCook which is recogniz
ed as the representative city of the
district
Brief responses were made by Sec
retary of State Wait State Treasur
er George Commissioner of Public
lands and Buildings Cowles and At
torney General Martin to invitations
to speak by Toastmaster Barnett
These gentlemen were each and all
complimentary of our city and their
treatment here and expressed sur
prise and gratification at the
opinent already made by the people a
this section of state
The efforts of Toastmaster Barnett
were up to his best traditions
hroughout the evening
All in all the gathering and func
tion to meet the members of the
State Board of Public Lands and
Buildings was most highly gratifying
to all concerned and we hope and be
lieve -made a favorable impression up
on the board
The ladies of the Eastern Star are
proper subjects for congratulations
upon the success of their efforts to
give a banquet in keeping with the
occasion
A superb orchestra played in the
upper hall corridor during the even
