Speaking of Representative Norris
of Nebraska the Kansas City Times
says George W Norris of McCook
member of congress from the Fifth
Nebraska district has been one of the
leaders of the progressive movement
in the house It was he who acted as
floor leader for the insurgents in the
attempt to get the duty off oil in the
tariff debate He was in charge again
in the fight to reorganize the House
rules this spring It would be most
unfortunate if the reactionaries could
make a combination with Democrats
to defeat him for re election
But Norris had a plurality of only
twenty two votes in the last election
and the Nebraska State Capital points
out that the balance of power in his
district lies with a little group of re
actionaries led by attorneys for the
Burlington railroad Unless patriotism
overcomes partisanship in the Fifth
Nebraska District an alliance of re
actionaries with Democrats may de
prive the public of a man of a tvpe
which it cannot afford to lose

ALDRICH MISQUOTED
David City Neb July 7 10

McCook Neb
Dear Sir
My attention was recently called
to an editorial in your paper wherein
you quoted ine as having said that
I was opposed to the initiative and
referendum because it was a Demo
cratic measure and that was in sub
stance a potent reason why I was
disqualified from being governor of
the state
Now in the matter of my state
ment that I was opposed to direct
legislature you are absolutely mis
taken At the time my attention was
called to this I corrected it in the
Lincoln State Journal and that
statement as follows
SENATOR ALDKICH MISQUOTED
When asked about his Omaha
speech Senator C H Aldrich replied
I was certainly misquoted and mis
understood by the reports I am
emphatically in favor of direct legis
lation What I said at Omaha was
simply this I am opposed to the
initiative and referendum BEING
CONSIDERED AT A SPECIAL SES
SION OF THE LEGISLATURE The
principles of the initiative and refer
endum are correct But we have
lived in Nebraska a long time with
out it and can still survive until Jan
uary 1911 when we will have a re
publican legislature that can and will
enact a measure along that line that
will be effective and practical
There is no urgent necessity for
a special session No extraordinary
situation exsists Does the Nebraska
constitution contemplate the calling
together of a legislature to keep a
political party out of an embarassing
situation The enactment at this
time of an initative and referendum
would not help the matter any It
would not settle the issue of county
option The people are ready for
this matter now If the distinguish
ed leader of the democratic party
wants to take the liquor question out
of the campaign this fall let him get
the legislature together and enact an
effective county option measure Such
a course would be practical and give
immediate results The abortive ef
forts broken promises and plighted
faith of the last democratic legisla
ture is still fresh in the minds of the
public and will be at the polls next
November And so I say the ques
tion of the initative and referendum
will and must be settled by the re
publican party and it will be settled
right and so will the question of
county option

The American people should more
and more appreciate the value of
nominating candidates Too much
they have left the matter of nominat

those especially interested The nom

electing them in importance and will
as long as intelligent voters follow
the fetich of voting it straight

nominees on record Know what they
will do before you elect them or

Infested with rogues vagabonds
