A SENATOR AT CHAUTAUQUA
Robert L Taylor Beloved Orator of
the Southland
It was years ago during the recon
struction days in the Southland when
Robert L Taylor first became known
to fame He was a struggling young
lawyer and his only assets were a half
dozen law books a fund of good na
ture that ebulated in every directiou
and a decrepid old fiddle
A carpet bagger from AVisconsin
was nominated for congress in the
Tennessee district where Taylor lived
and it did not look possible to beat
him Finally Bob was persuaded
to accept the nomination on the oppo
sition ticket and without a logical
chance to win mounted a raw boned
horse tucked his fiddle under his arm
and set out among the farmers and
rough mountaineers of the district
He helped the moushiners at their
stills he washed dishes for the ma
trons wrestled and told stories with
the young men made love to the maid
ens kissed the babies and fiddled
at the barn dances
Taylor went to congress and the
Wisconsin man went back to La
Crosse
At Washington he made a reputa
tion for his keen wit and his sharr
debate
He was elected governor of his
state but he had to beat his brother
who was the candidate on the oppo
site ticket
Those who know him best say thai
he has never sought office voluntarily
He has been forced into every cam
paign and the people love him so much
that he is always elected
Senator Taylor is a deep thinkei
and seldom goes far wrong in his judg
ment of men and public matters He
is a valuable member of the uppei
house of Congress
As an orator and lecturer Robert L
Taylor does not thunder from the for
um He is not a Cicero nor a Webster
His lecture is one of prose poetry Nc
man can draw a more beautiful picture
of youth and innocence and love and
duty than can the Tennessee senator
No man can draw the zenith closer
and put man in closer fellowship with
his astral brothers When Taylor
twangs he sylvan harp strings Na
tures mantle falls and we commune
with the things of earth of air of sea
and sky We are brought into intimate
relationship with the God of light and
life and love
And yet Taylor is said to be one ol
the most successful humorists on the
platform He is an inimitable storj
teller and his rapid transition from the
sublime to the ridiculous taking hh
audience with him willingly goes tc
show that the vale of laughter aric
slough of tears are very close together
