Takes Root Amoig Lads of Springfield Mass FIRST IN THE UNITED STATES Helpful Organization Which Has Spread Over Great Britain and Aus tralia Is Introduced In Y M C A of Bay State City by Young Man From Edinburgh C1mI In khaki suits golf hose belt and riHh plouch hats the Young Hens Christian association scouts of Sprlngtield Mass organized a few days ago are objects of nitent tn their elders as well as of eny to a large juvenile contingent The Idea Is adopted from England which has- more than 200000 boy scouts The SprlngUeld patrol which Is the tirst to be organized in the United States is In charge of Edwin D Ilorstield of Edinburgh a student at the Interna tional Young Mens Christian associa tion training school in Spriugtield Mass Mr Horstield had experience In the movement In his native eouu try and consequently is well adapted to give the boy scout idea the necessa ry impetus to make it a success in the United States Mr Horsfleld admits that he is ex perimenting in an untried Geld but he Is confident that once the idea is un derstood it will spread as rapidly as it did in England Scotland Germany and Australia A boy must be thir teen years old to be eligible for en rollment as a scouL Some of the boys are seventeen or eighteen years old and a few twenty years Must Be Useful and Help Others The scout law contains much that appeals to the schoolboy code of hon or Its fundamental principles are as follows First A scouts honor is to be trusted Second A scout is loyal to his coun try and his employers Third A scouts duty is to be use ful and to help others Fourth A scout Is a friend to all and a brother to every other scout uo matter to what social class the other belongs Fifth A scout is courteous Sixth He is a friend to all animals Seventh He obeys orders Eighth He smiles and whistles un der all circumstances Ninth He Is thrifty The pledge which the boy scout takes is as follows 1 will do my duty to God and ray country I will do my best to Help others whatever it costs me I linow the scout law and will obey it Taking this pledge indicates that the boy intends to roll up his sleeves and get into business said Mr Hors tield In England the boy scout is an important personage He is not only building up his body but he is proving himself useful How Scouts Are Benefited Many a fond mother who a few years ago was opposed to having her son join the boy scouts now concedes that the experience has brought about a marked improvement in her son A first class scout must prove himself to have a practical knowledge of first aid to the injured signaling Morse semaphore and staff swimming life saving and other branches His scout ing games teach him to be observant aud he learns of nature and- of ani mals His endurance powers are also greatly strengthened Many parents in the United States are looking for some organization which will develop everything that is good in their boys There is a boys department in the Young Mens Chris tian association and there are boys clubs and Bible classes yet the aver age boy longs within himself for something else The object is not to make soldiers of the boys They are peace scouts If one has the welfare of the boy at heart if he would help to make the future manhood stronger and better his service can be turned to no better channel than this the boy srout movement A PUGILISTS PERSONALITY A Brodbeck president of the Aero club of Utah who says he is already negotiating with Count von Zeppelin While the line would be primarily for the rapid transit of passengers Brodbeck says he has written to Post master General Hitchcock asking if the postofiice department has author- - x I sM 0W PPSi - foliar COUNT VON ZEPPELIN ity to transport mail by airship He has been advised that it could not be done unless congress should specify airships as one of the means ot trans portation In his proposal Brodbeck says the practicability of the Zeppelin ship has been proved It would average forty miles an hour he says and principal stations on the route as plauned would be New York city Chicago Omaha Denver Salt Lake City San Francis co Seattle Fort William Bering Sak holm Tokyo Pekln Irkutsk Round the waist of the hatless girl While over the dustless mudless roads In a horseless wagon they whirl Like a leadless bullet from hammerless gun By smokeless powder driven They fly to taste the speechless joys By endless union given The only luncheon his coinless purse Affords to them the means Is a tasteless meal of boneless cod With a dish of strlngless beans He smokes his old tobaccoless pipe And laughs a mirthless laugh When papa tries to coax her back By wireless telegraph Motor Record i Fit the Little Feet in Cool Oxfords Dont be satisfied with any old Shoe for the children Their
