collections at Nashville during the month of February should be somewhat illuminating to those who claim that more intoxicants are consumed under prohibitory statutes than under the li cense system The statistics given out by the collector indicate that exactly the opposite is true Beer stamp collections by the Federal government at its Nash villa ollica during February 1910 were less by thirty one per cent than those for February 1909 before state wide prohi bition had gone into effect The figures were 15270 for February 1909 against 11615 for 1910 The spirit stamps rev enue fell off forty seven per cent In 1909 the colections were 117185 61 in 1910 they were 79200 These figures are pretty good evidence that prohibition does prohibit Knoxvillo Tenn Senti nel Real Estate Filings The a piece by heart One day Mrs Gastrel set a little girl to repeat to him Catos soliloquy which she went through very correct ly The doctor after a pause asked tb child What was to bring Cato to an end She said it was a knife No my dear it was not so My Aunt Polly said it was a knife Why Aunt Pollys knife may do but it was a dagger my dear- He then asked her the meauing of bane and antidote which she was unable to give Mrs Gastrel said You cannot expect so young a child to know the meaning of such words He theu saicl My dear how many pence are there in sixpence I cannot tell sir was the half terriGed reply Ou this addressing himself to Mrs Gas trel he said Now my dear lady can anything be more ridiculous than to teach a child Catos soliloquy who does not know how many pence there are In sixpence Pepys and the Comet They were watching a comet In Pepys day though Halley at the time was but eight years old My Lord Sandwich this day says the diarist Dec 21 1GG4 writes me word that he hath seen at Portsmouth the comet and says it is the most extraordinary thing he ever saw Again on the 24th Having sat up all night till past 2 oclock this morning our porter be ing appointed comes and tells us that the bellman tells him that the star is seen upon Tower hill so I that had been all night setting in order of my old papers in my chamber did now leave off all and my boy and 1 to the Tower bill It being a most 6ne bright moonshine night and a great frost but no comet to be seen Later the same day however Pepys saw the comet which now whether worn away or no 1 know not appears not with a tail but only is larger and dull er than any other star Carrying a Cane A man who carries a cane always seems important to us An Atchison man not only carries a cane but when he stops to talk and Other Beasts Also Bagged by Famous Old Time Cowboy Uses Lassos Msec to Hold Up a Weight of Two Tons To Bring Back Live Trophies Buffalo Jones C 1 Jones old time cowboy and still youthful at sixty five has gone Colonel Theodore Itoosevelt one better in the African jungle While the former president who delights to be called a great fauna naturalist has been slaying wild beasts Buffalo Jones has been roping the critters In true wild western style and he will bring the animals alive to the United States Ilere is a cablegram dated Nairobi Africa which was received the other day from Jones by F T Bird a law yer of New York city Have roped and tied rhinos giraffes leopards cheetahs and a variety of other wild animals One immense rhino bull made trouble He charged all of our party close to a hundred times and smashed the tripod of the photographers camera The operator escaped and all his plates were uninjured We are going after lions and African buffaloes next Men horses and dogs arc in splendid con dition Hunting Lions With Firecrackers There can be no doubt that Buffalo Jones has been going some When he first announced to the world that he intended to get into the jungle with some good strong rope and some trustworthy firecrackers and gather in some wild animals many persons laughed at liim Whoever heard of hunting lions with firecrackers asked one of his friends in derision Nobody as yet Jones replied But If a lion gets into a thicket where we cant get at him I guess a firecracker or two will make him think its a mighty unhealthy locality and hell change his base of operations mighty fast Just before he left the United States Jones was a guest of the Campfire club of New York at a banquet given in his honor The next day he slipped quietly aboard his steamer It was not until he reached London in the middle of February that the mission of Junes was entirely known To a London newspaper man who interviewed him about roping lions lie said Well the African lion is a difficult problem Its got to be solved Ill catch him all right but what will happen after that I dont pretend to know being a hunter and not a proph et I am taking my branding irons and the lions I dont want Ill brand and turn loose to fight another day 1 shall try the rhinoceros and the buffalo too if I can get him out of the bush My lassos are of Russian hemp hard twisted so that they will go through the air with the least pos sible resistance Though no thicker than a little finger ray lasso will hold up a weight of two tons When I have made a capture I tie it with a rope through which runs a steel wire I believe in giving these wild things a ftth sporting chance and Ill make good or know the reason why Other meu may bring trophies of the hunt in the form of skins and skeletons but yours truly will bring the real live article back to the United States of America or miss his guess entirely Personnel of the Hunting Party One of the most interesting features of the trip of the Buffalo Jones party to Africa is the personnel of the party itself Besides Jones himself the party is made up of four men Arthur A Fowler the manager of the party is a member of a firm of iron merchants lie is a great sportsman and had arranged for a trip to Africa and was prevailed upon to take the management of the Buffalo Jones party He accepted on condition that he pay all his own expenses but was to have a full share of the sport Mr Fowler has a country house at Pea pack N J where he hunts regularly with the Essex hounds Guy H Scull is a Harvard man who has been a newspaper correspondent In two wars in Manchuria and South Africa and he also led the party of Harvard men who went to the Baha mas on the Mayflower a little more than a year ago in search of hidden treasure The other members of the party are Marshall D Loveless of Ros well X M and Ambrose 1 Means of southern New Mexico Both are ex pert cow purichers Xaturally the most interesting per sonality in the party is Buffalo Jones himself because he is the last of the great plainsmen in active life To be sure Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill are still alive but they no longer trail big game over the prairies as a means of livelihood This Jones does For years Jones was government game warden of Yellowstone park and while there he made numerous captures of full grown mountain lions by roping them Also his feat of man icuring the grizzly bears of the park made him known all over the country One of the exciting incidents of his career was the whipping of the had bears of the Yellowstone park to put the fear of man Into their hearts UGENE N FOSS New Massachusetts Congressman Won His Scat on National Issues The election to congress recently of Eugene N Foss Democrat of Massa chusetts to succeed the Population Increased More Than One fourth Canada has been much in the public pye of late owing to the settlement of the threatened tariff war and nation wide in t errs t is being taken in that country and Its affairs Each year many Americans seek homes there and that the number is growing an nually Is shown in the report Just transmitted to congress by Senator Dillingham chairman of the immigra tion commission Of the homestead entries in western Canada from 1100 to 1100 00 per cent were by immigrants and -1-101 per cent of these were by newcomers from the United States W V llusband one of the secre taries of the commission prepared this report which bears solely on the Im migration situation in Canada fia I attention is given Canadas policy of stimulating immigration of the kind desired and discouraging the classes deemed undesirable Oilicial state ments are quoted to show that Canada wants Immigrants whose purpose It Is to enter agricultural pursuits either as owners tenants or laborers and that it is the purpose of the government to exclude immigrants whose presence in Canada would tend to add to the con gestion of towns and cities In pursuing this policy organized ef fort is made to secure immigrants from countries which furnish the classes or races desired The countries favored by Canada in this regard are the Unit ed Kingdom France Belgium Hol land Germany Denmark Iceland Fin land Norway Sweden and Switzerland and of course the United States No effort is made to get immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and un less it is the purpose of such immi grants to enter agricultural pursuits their admission to Canada is doubtful Under Official Direction In the United- States the Canadian propaganda is carried on under the general direction of an emigration from the United States to Canada the report says Probably no other considerable move ment of population from one country to another at the present time is so largely composed of agricultural people as the emigration from the United States to Canada 120450 or more than 78 per cent of the total number going to Can ada In 1907 190S and 1009 were classed as farmers or farm laborers which Includes also accompanying members of families while less than 23 per cent of all other emigrants to Canada during the same pe riod were of those classes There is at the present time a large emigration from Canada to the Unit ed States of persons who intend tak ing up a permanent residence there 1244597 Persons Admitted The total emigration to Canada from all sources from 1000 to 1909 was 1244597 or a number equal to 261 per cent of the total population of the Dominion in 1901 The races of na tionalities furnishing the largest num bers of emigrants to Canada during that period
