will appear that the Bartley Telephone Co is again an applicant for a franchise to run its lines into our city It is the purpose of the company to connect its lines over the county with the county court house and at most at present to have a booth down town for its patrons and it is stated that they do not contemplate at this time to establish an exchange here This telephone line would make it possible for many Red Willow county people to have connection with the county court house and its affairs The Tribune believes that the franchise should be grant ed and hopes the council will so bold Tuesday and it developed into one of the most hotly contested elections held in the city for years and the largest vote ever polled in the city was gotten out oyer 700 being cust which resulted in the election of the straight republican ticket which was headed by Ed Huber for mayor He won out by some fifty majority One of the big bones of con tention was the electing of two members for the school board This contest was brought about largely by the action of the graduating class of 1910 who walked out of school a few weeks ago because they could not run it and from what your correspondent oan learn was wholly unwarranted on their part It is quite apparent that a few of the class had the swell head and thought they were smarter than the school board and the principal of the schools McCook prides herself on having one of the best public schools in the state thousands of dollars 0 have been expended in bring them up to their present state of proficiency The board of education have always been untiring in their efforts spending much valuable time and energy to secure the best teachers possible and the school to day is headed by one of the brightest men in the state In the years to come these same stud ents will look back upon their action as one of the most foolhardy of their lives as they alone will be the loosers As they go out to battle with the stern realities of a cold relentless world they will find that a good education is one of the best friends they have got and to throw away the Bplendid opportunities which the schools of McCook affords will be a mistake not easy to overcome They will no doubt find that the fairest rose grows on the tbornest bush and to pluck it they will no doubt meet with Beveral briers The election of E H Doan and H E Culbertson by the de cisive majorities they received as mem bers of the board is a complete vindi cation of the board and the principal of the stand they took in the late difficulty and is a sound rebuke to those who thought they were the whole thing in the matter of the schools Indianola Reporter The above article appears in the In dianola Reporter of April 7th A sheet claiming to be Democratic and coming among us to teach us the principles of Democracy as taught byjefferscn end in later days by Bryan Democrats of McCook how do you like this an article stronger in the de fense of entrenched monopoly in our beautiful little city thin either of our papers in town would print This being our first attempt with a democratic ticket in city aff irs and with the aid of a portion of the progres sive Republicans of the town being able to come so nea to a victory in the face of the combined oppositions against us we feel somewhat encouraged Not withstanding a few Democrats for per sonal gain saw fit to make a strenuous fight on the head of our ticket but for the only sheet iD the county posing as Democratic to deliver such a tirade on our honest efforts for reform cant help but rankle in the heart of any trup Democrat anywhere in this county should he be called upon to in any way aid the above paper as being Democratic Now a3 to that portion of the above article pertaining to our schools and the late lamented class of 1910 Permit me to first say that this trouble is the prop erty of and belongs entirely to this city and school district and what the end will be no one knows but we firmly be lieve that the people here are fully able to care for themselves in this matter without the aid of outside papers and any one wishing to air their grievances be they either real or imaginary should do so at home As to the writer of the above article the best that can be said of or for them is that they graduated from our school but their life since has not been one that would entitle them to the position of advisor for your children or mine Having made a complete failure of life and no longer commanding the respect of the better class of McCook nor of his own political party When he speaks of the male members of the class of 1910 as swell heads and smartaleoks from the people of McCook he deserves and gets nothing but contempt It is well known here the kind and character of these children in question and where they are today and the ef forts they are putting forth to yet achieve greater things and be better fitted for lifes work I venture the prediction that time will reveal the fact that any one or all of this class will come nearer gathering the rose from the thorny bush than ever the writer of the above article does Now in conclusion let me say that the above article detestable as it is would have been beneath my notice only for the slur and reflection cast on these young that deserve better things and for my part I shall try to see that not only these youngsters in question but that the young of McCook get a square deal R A Green Hubers have everything in olives plain and stuffed from 15 cents to 81 a bottle The Episcopal brethren are raising
