being kept in its upright or normal po sition by the action of a gyroscope It is always so balanced either when standing or when running that all tendency to incline is counteracted by the gyroscope If you will come with me I will show yon much farther than America So chuckling to themselves they de cided to follow him After trudging for about half an hour up the moun tain side in a boiling sun Horse Lord Dncre who died fighting for the Lancastrians at Towton England in 1 Uil directed that if he werekilled in the battle his favorite war hore shoe be burled in the same grave with him According to his wishes when his in terment took place in Saxon church yard after the battle a tremendous grave was dug and in it the warrio was burled seated upright on hi norse r or centuries retiectlons we cast iiiion the accuracy of this tradi tion but some years ago while exca rations were being made close by th reputed burial place of Lord Dacre the pick of a digger struck into a great bone and upon further search behr made the skull of a big horse was brought to the surface As this was found almost at the very spot under which the body of Lord Dacre wa said to 1e l uas i cepted as confirma tion or ine tradition particularly as the skull was found to be standing verti cally in the soil The skull was re placed carefully in its original position and the excavation filled up Queer Creatures There are microscopic creatures which live in roof gutters and on the bark of trees and are known as water bears and wheel animalculae If al lowed to dry up under the micros ope they can lie seen to shrivel into shape less masses which may be kept fci years uninjured in the dried state On being placed after this long interval in water they gradually plump up re smne their proper shape and more about in search of food just as if notli ing had happened Much the same i true for the minute worms which from the substances in which they lire are known as paste and vinegar eels Well known is the famous case of the desert snail which retracted into its shell was fastened to a tali let in the British museum and show ed no sign of life for seren years when one morning it was found crawl ing hungrily about the glass case that formed its prison Westminster Ja zette Saluting With the Hat Before the inrention of wigs the hat was rarely remored except to salute others especially royal personages It was worn at table when ladies or per sons of rank were present Except when saluting royalty it was the cus tom merely to raise the hand to the hat somewhat after the manner of a military salute When it became the mode to wear a profusion of false hair the hat was less needed as a protec tion for the head and was carried un der the arm A Rettery A reliary was the name ot a Roman gladiator armed in a peculiar way He was furnished with a trident and net with no more corering than a short tunic and with these implements he endearored to entangle ana dispatch his adrersary who was called a secu tor from sei ni to follow and was armed with a helmet a shield and a sword The name of the first is pro nounced as if spelled the accent on the first syllable Improving on Euclid The Pioneer of Allahabad tells stories of some kindergarten classes in the English army Among the defi nitions given in an examination is one of a circle peculiarly happy which gires a freshness to Euclid
