Lieutenant Shackleton wrote his
name high on the roll of orploron
who venture to the unknown places
of the earths surface when ou his last
expedition he reached the farthest
south SS degrees 23 minutes within
111 miles of the south pole and Sol
miles nearer that goal than any other
explorer
This was not the first antarctic work
of Lieutenant Shuckloton for in 1103
he accompanied Captain II P Scott
It N on an expedition there and was
one of three men who reached a new
mark that time
He will start on his next expedition
in quest of the south pole some time
the coming summer
Two American women who will be
much in the linlelight abroad in the
future are Mrs Richard Kerens wife
of the newly appointed ambassador to
Austria Hungary and her daughter
Gladys a strikingly beautiful gin
whose debut last year created a big
sensation on account of the elaborate
ness of the affair
Mrs Kerens has for many years en

planning some unique affairs when the
family gets settled in Vienna The
Kerens are well known in most of the

The serious illness that struck Na
than Straus the famous merchant phi
lanthropist recently was no surprise
to his friends who
hnvo fnr
weeks that he had
been overworking
his illness being
the result of the
fight he made to
overcome opposi
tion to the loca
tion of a tubercu
losis preventorium
for poor children
at Lakewood NJ
Abroad Mr
Straus has done
much to save the

lives of infants by giving away pure
milk and in other ways helping the
poor and Americans are familiar with
the beneficent work he has done hi
his own land by means of the pasteur
ized milk plants in the large cities and
the great reduction in infant mortality
which resulted from the provision thus
made for an abundant supply of abso
lutely pure milk
The war over the preventorium has
been fought most bitterly for months
Its object was to care for children
who showed the first signs of tubercu
losis Mr Straus was one of the most
ardent advocates of the institution
and on him fell the burden of most
of the fighting A considerable section
of the cottase colony was bitterly op
posed to its presence and mass meet
ings were held to protest
Kecently it was announced that the
trustees of the preventorium had de
cided to yield to public opinion and
would remove it elsewhere It was un
doubtedly a sad blow to Mr Straus
whose heart was in the work
