FATTENING HOGS
WITHOUT CORN
A fanner of wide experience and
observation eager to be of some help
to others says For years I liavi
read farm journals farmers bulletins
and everything from which1 I could
hope to learn something that would
be of help I am now very glad that
I did so as it was very necessary for
me to economize this year in every
way especially in feed
I had little stock to feed and les
to feedit on I had no corn and there
was very little for sale in the country
which made the question of getting
my few hogs in condition for meit i
very serious one 1iguring as ll
the journals and bulletins do- iei
bushels of for each 100 pounds o
pork it would require the purchase of
sixty bushels of corn for 100 pound
gain on each hog
This would mean the spending of
30 to -10 I did not have this money
neither did I have a way of getting it
but I managed to got fourteen and one
half bushels of corn from a neighbor
3 fed this corn to forty chickens and
six hogs Five of the hogs were
shotes weighing about fifty pounds
each Along with this corn 1 fed
sugar beets winter r ulishes carrot
parsnips tomatoes and scraps from
the table dishwater a small quantity
of ship stuff and wheat bran
When the corn was all used the
had put on about 12 pounds anc
1 shote about fifty pounds The
un total of this increase in weight
A rKIZC POLAND OniNA sow
was about 37 pounds at an actual
cost of about 14 figuring everything
fed at the open market price
This is the reverse of an experi
ence I had once before Some years
ago I fed corn and clear water entirely
If the corn then fed had been sold at
the market price and pork bought with
the money received the money would
have paid for about twice as much
pork as we had when we killed our
hogs This was at a time when corn
cost from 30 to 40 cents a bushel and
it cost about 3 cents to feed hogs The
weather was very unfavorable also
I have learned that a few vegeta
bles are relished by hogs as well as
hy human beings and they also aid
digestion I have fed pumpkins and
squashes along with corn Squashe
are the better feed for hogs but they
are not as valuable as sugar beets car
rots and parsnips
I have found the three latter
tables the easier produced that is can
be grown mere abundantly on impro
vised land and it requires fairly good
soil for the raising of squashes and
pumpkins In past years I have pre
pared a few hills making them rich
with manure and planting the seed
from May 20 to June 1 When the
dry season came I watered these hills
after sunset and had good results As
this experiment proved successful with
me I thought it might prove so to
others
Feeding the Dairy Catf
Proper feeding of the dairy calf must
begin when the animal is young If
we food the growing heifer nitrogenous
foods to develop muscle and bono and
an abundance of coarse fodder to de
velop a capacity for digesting and as
similating a large amount of food
we may crnect these characteristics to
show to a greater or less extent in the
full giown cow On the other hand
if the cow is fed in calfhood largely
carbonaceous and fat forming foods
whatever breed we may have at the
start we must expect as a result of
this method of feeding an animal hav
ing a tendency to lay on flesh readily
and with dairy qualities poorly devel
oped After a cow has begun to pro
duce milk still more attention should
be given to supplying her with a bal
anced ration if large yields are to be
obtained
The Black Sheep
The black sheep o the flock is
proverbial Every breeder knows that
the I k lamb is very liable to appear
in c i ry springs Iamb crop He is
nor sorry if the little black fellow does
not appear in fact he is rather glad
for the black one is a blot on the uni
formity which every good breeder i
proud to show iu his bunch of lambs
Then too the wool buyer often insists
upon knocking off something on the
black fl ce The fact is however
that black wool sells at a premium
right now The rancher who has
enough black fleeces to fill a sack al
ways sorts them and gets the advan
tage of the higher price for them
Reliable Profits
Daily products fluctuate less in price
than probably any other product of
the farm Wheat aud cotton aud other
crops may rapidly ascend or descend
the scale of prices but the dairyman
knows that his products will sell at a
fair margin of profit every mouth in
the year
Alfalfa For Hog Lot
Alfalfa hay for ue in the winter
time in the hog lot should be cut just
as the blossoms are beginning to show
If allowed to stand until well in bloom
the stalks become woody there is a
greater loss of leaf in curing and there
is much waste and loss of feeding

TRAINING J SHEEP DOG
The First Essential Is to Teach Hirr
to Love You
If there Is anything that n shepherd
needs help about It is training a sheep
dog says Professov Arbuekle in the
American Sheep Hreder
You waut your dog to come to you
as n pup not over two months old as
you want him to know no other marter
than yourself At two months he will
learn his name and pick up simple les
sons It will be well for him to g
where the sheep
not try to teach
nor must you let
get close enough
are but you must
him to herd them
a ewe wun a luniu
to make a pass at
him He must not be trigntenea wiui
sheep
The first lesson Is to teach him to
love you This is easy if you are
gentle with him and will pet him
TWO YEAR -OLD COLLIE SIIErr DOG
quently for the collie loves a caress
as much as he does his breakfast Give
him a short name and use it often
Speak it softly with the caress and
harsh with a rebuke Whenever you
approach his yard or kennel call him
to you by saying Come You may
accompany this with his name or with
a whistle and you must be careful to
give him the same whistle always
This is his next lesson ne will soon
learn this and soon you will have the
most dillicult lesson of all to give
This is to teach him to obey When
you say Come he must come to you
and he must know that he is compelled
to come whether he desires to do so
or not
Just here you andyour pup will have
your first battle and if the victory is
yours you are well on the way to suc
cessful training If he refuses to come
go after him and bring him to you
caressing him for some time Then
try it over agnin Never let him feel
that he is Inning his way but avoid
making a I ear issue with him yet for
he must know punishment first and
you must know what form of punish
ment will suit the individual deg best
Some day after
what Come means
ly run from you just to test you Kep
your patient o now and bo willing to
take two or three hours off jut here
It is worth it Try as before to bring
him by caressing but he is likely to
set his head on disobedience
must punish him
so you i
Auto Dairymen
There was a dairymens convention
recently that brought to Chicago milk
producers from the five states imme
diately tributary to the groat Elgin
and Wisconsin creamery districts Of
those attending 112 were asked as to
the use and value of the automobile
to hem
Thirty eight of them own automo
biles aud use them constantly in busi
ness Eleven own more than one
They are ued in marketing butter
fats mainly but seven used the power
to operato snparators one to flush his
dairy barn another to operate his bot
tle washer
The roads in the creamery district
are better than the average country
roads and the automobile most used
is a late type with a tonncau that
can be removed leaving a flat plat
form for freight
Contagious and Fatal
Anthrax is a contagious and fatal
disease An animal so afflicted may
without having shown any sign of
disease drop down in the pasture and
die in convulsions in a very short
time or an animal may be apparent
ly well at night and be found dead
in the morning It stops feeding or
ruminating a few hours before death
It is then taken with chills and
fever and if its temperature be tak
en it will be found to be exceeding
ly high The treatment for anthrax
is useless The only thimj to do is to
prevent the balance of the herd from
becoming affected This is done by
vaccinating them and injecting vac
cine under the skin with a hypoder
mic syringe the results of which arc
very good Dr David Roberts
Pro Hi From Saws
If there is a more profitable breed
ing animal on a farm than a good
sow I have not found it says a writer
in the Breeder s Gazette Chicago She
has not the habits or makeup to inter
est all stcckmeu So long as the world
cauiiot be fed without pork the sow I
and her product will be objects of in
terest to the farming world
It Is a sad commentary on the meth
ods of swine growers that GO per cent
or more of piers farrowed perish in in
fancy It Is not reasonable to suppose
such a cutting down of the legitimate
profits of the business is necessary
Like too many other losses in stock
It is largely preventable
Alfalfa For Sheep
Alfalfa and sheep go together just
as naturally as ducks and water Al
falfa as a feed has proved beyond
doubt that it is far ahead of any other
roughage for sheep All over the west
alfalfa is an indispensable factor In
winter feeding and so well do sheep j
uk uu on it mac eastern farmers are
taking it up after waiting fifrv years
for the west to set the pace
