Red Willow last Thursday While the attendance was not up to that of last year on account of many boing kept away by pressing farm work the grovo by the Willow creek on Mrs Phoebe G Taylors farm was the scene of a gathering of old timers and others numerous enough to give all a good time in the eating of their annual feast the exchange of reminiscences and che renewal oi friendships of olden times and of later days The registration was completed before noon when the people sat down to their annual picnic a spread of good things in abundance which lacked nothing of fullest enjoyment the feast being topped off with John Longneckers annual donation of watermelons home grown Following this feature was the sing ing of America and a character istic speech by Rav M B Carman of McCook whose -wit and humor were fully appreciated He spoke in intro- duction of some of his early experiences in this western Nebraska and conclud ed with a glance at the greatness of this country of ours Brief talks were made by J B Me serve John Longnecker E S Hill J S Phillips and others after which let ters from H H Pickens and George Hunter both new residents of Cali fornia were read with their greetings and word concerning the home of their adoption All were enjoyed It was unanimously agreed to become an auxiliary of the Nebraska Historical society as requested by the state and parent society which intended having a representative present but was unable to do so on account of other engage ments on that date Vacancies appearing in the vice-presidents from Valley Grange and Red Wil low precincts A D Johnston was chosen for Valley Grange and William Byfield for Red Willow At the election of officers W S Fitch was chosen president again and Mrs R H Thomas was reelected secre tary In the absence of Mrs Thomas her husband served as secretary at this meeting While all the records of the society were destroyed with the residence of Mrs Thomas week before last it will be pleasing news to the old settlers to know that she bad just sent a copy of the records complete to the Nebraska Historical society who made a record of the same in Lincoln so that a new and practically complete record can be se cured from the state society The president was authorized to ap point a committee of three to provide special music for next meeting of the society The Red Willow County Old by tho illness of his aged father The father died on last Friday and on Sunday was buried at Fairmont Fathor Perkins was 81 years of age at his death Ho assisted in the organization of Fillmore county
