FELT WANT A Pica For a Graduated Standard of iVIisconduct What is really wanted ut the present time Is u stauihird of misconduct We are constantly doing things iu doubt us if we hadnt a right to do them The confusion caused by people do ing things which in their circumstances we had no right to expect is the prin cipal cause of our troubles It ought to be definitely settled for example that any millionaire who has say over a hundred millions will there after lead an honest life If he has only fifty millions Ids life should be semi honest and if he has only a paltry ten millions then it ought to be con ceded that he can loot a few railroads or so until he gets on his feet Up to say ten thousand a year no man can afford to be dishonest lie ought to get up in the cars and give his seat to women under thirty live at least and of course lie will not take the chance of robbing any safe From ten thousand up to a hundred thou sand he can engage in little dishonest fliers by making one of a pool or put ting through a land deal or so for variety When he gets fifty millions or more together however every man ought to ask himself plainly the question whether from now 6n he ought not to be a philanthropist Doesnt he owe this to his fellow men Life CHOOSING A VOCATION Follow Common Sense and Conscience and Do Your Best It is very certain that no man is fit for everything but it is almost Lights That Warn and Guide the Mariner A BLAZE OF KEROSENE OIL The Wonderful Lamps and Lenses That Produce the Brilliant and Far reaching Flame Why Electricity Js Not Used In Lighthouses The goal toward which the light house board of this country s striving Is a continuous chain of lights com pletely encircling the United States and possessions and in the case of riv ers and inland seas bounding the wa ters on all sides so that a ship may never leave the area of a light thrown by one lighthouse before entering the circle of the light of another As fast as congress will appropriate the money the gaps are being filled But what makes the light When ihe curious Inquirer is told kerosene he naturally wonders why his own student lamp does not give a better light if the same oil in the lighthouse sends its beam from five to twenty live miles Various methods of lighting were in use until 3S40 when a new system was introduced of employing nearly true paraboloid reflectors and better glass lenses In some cases these re flectors gave a light which is not sur J passed even today except when han dled with intelligent care In 1So2 when the present lighthouse board was instituted the Fresual system of len ticular glasses was introduced from which something nature plainly points I France and still remains The first out to him by giving him a tendency cost is great but by the saving of oil and propensity to it I look upon common sense to be to the mind what conscience is to the heart the faithful and constant moni tor of what is right or wrong And I am convinced that no man commits either a crime or a folly but against the manifest and sensible representa tions of the one or the other Every man finds in himself either from nature or education for they are hard to distinguish a peculiar bent and disposition to some particular character and his straggling against It is the fruitless and endless labor of Sisyphus Let him follow and culti vate that vocation he will succeed in it and be considerable in one way at least whereas if he departs from it he will at best be inconsiderable proba bly ridiculous Lord Chesterfield The Oyster Crab Some of the most remarkable crabs In the world live at the expense of other animals They are crustacean tramps and have no shame in sustain ing existence at other animals cost One of these marine tramps is a little fellow that makes its home with the living oyster In fact it dwells in the oysters shell and feeds on whatever is left over from the mollusks dinners Oddly enough however it is only the female that has this habit of board ing out The male crab has no per manent home but spends its time swimming about at the surface of the water Oyster crabs sometimes are big enough to have an arm stretch of an inch Epicures consider them very good to eat Sometimes they are cook ed separately and occasionally they are pickled Crabs of nearly allied spe cies somewhat bigger are found in the shells of mussels and scallops In this case again only the female is a parasite Scottish Caution Certainly the cautious Scot spirit pervaded the opinions of the Scottish architect who was called upon to erect a building in England upon the long lease system so common with Angli can proprietors but quite new to our friend When he found the proposal was to build upon the tenure of 009 years he quietly suggested Could ye no male it a thousand Nine hundred and ninety nine years 11 be slippin awa But of all the cautious and careful answers we ever heard of was one given by a carpenter to an old lady in Glasgow for whom he was working and the anecdote is well authenticat ed She had offered him a dram and asked him whether he would have it then or wait till his work was done Indeed mem he said theres been sic a power o sudden deaths lately that Ill just tak it now Reminis cences of Dean Ramsay Gallantry At a school in Aberdeen a teacher was examining her class on the Bible the lesson being a part of Genesis The teacher asked her class Why did the serpent tempt Eve instead of Adam For some time there was silence but at length a little boy held up his hand and replied Please mum cause its ladies first Tit Bits over the rellector system this is soon reduced With any reasonable care a fine light always results and it is im possible for a keeper to maintain a poor light with this apparatus without flagrant disobedience of instructions Even with such an apparatus no common lamp can supply the light First order lamps have five wicks one inside the otuer and are fed with oil by a pump and pipe system The oil is fed to the wicks so that it reaches the ends where the flame is in the right time and in the right quantity It is difficult to look at it so intense is the light In the lenses rather than in the lamp is the secret for they pick up and utilize nearly all the rays of light which ordinarily go astray The Fresnel apparatus collects almost all of this waste light and reflects and refracts it out in one great broad beam of light parallel to the surface of the sea where it is needed The flames which come from the lamps are largely transparent So of course are all other similar flames If flames were not transparent there could be no advantage in having one flame inside another and a third inside the first two etc The lights from the inner flames could not get out and would do no good In some lighthouses usually for range light purposes the light is nil to be concentrated in one beam This is done by concentric rings of prisms and a central bullseye and a reflector Vessels getting such a light in range either by itself or with another light and running down the beam are safe from obstructions which may be near by the range lights or beams of light marking out the channel to be fol lowed It is frequently asked of light keep ers why electricity is not used in place of mineral oil An electric light is expensive to install and difficult and expensive to maintain There is al ways difficulty in keeping the arc ex actly iu the focal point of the lenses the carbons never burning twice alike and constant watching being neces sary Failure to have the light source exactly in the focal point of the lens results in sending the light rays up or down instead of straight out where they are wanted Electricity while superior in penetrative power in a fog has no advantage over a power ful oil lantern in clear weather Min eral oil colza oil or lard oil lights of the first order could be seen a hun dred miles were it not for the curva ture ot tue cartli and as long as tue light is visible long before the coast is all purposes are served It is only within recent years that mineral oil has been in use Lard oil succeeded colza oil and was used ex clusively up to 1SS0 and with mineral oil up to 1SS0 Since the latter year mineral oil has been used entirely ex cept where electricity has been experi mented with or coal or acetylene gas So far coal oH for power efficiency cleanliness ease of operation and cheapness holds its own against all other means of light making Electricity if it can be successfully installed is the best light but through expense of maintenance and in the in ability to get skilled attendants for such a light for the price set on keep ers services it makes slow headway The traveler who cruises up the coasts and who sinks one light before picking up -another must know that somewhere in the dark circle is a spot picked for the foundation of a light which will be erected as soon as funds and time allow
