Dispatcher J F Forbes who among other tumps used the following language in the cere monial Mr Weidenhamer A short time since on the completion of a piece of railway in tho Northwest a gentleman said that he considered that the North west owes more to Mr JJ Hill than to any other man and to him justly was duo tho title of Empire Builder As to that I know not but this I do know that when the Hill St Francis branch of the Burlington extending from Orleans Neb to St Francis Kas a distance of 110 miles there are many deep cuts after the road crosses into Kansas These have occa sioned much annoyance and delay of trains in winter by filling up with snow But this fall a new difficulty arose The Russian thistle has grown to great pro portions in that region this year and the rolling weeds as large as a bushel basket bave been whirled across the prairies by the wind When one of the deed cuts was in their path it was quick ly filled Trains have been stopped frequently and as effectually as though the blockade was made by tightly drifted snow When this occurred the section hands and trainmen have cleared the track with forks and shovels a long and tedious taBk One of these block ades occurred on Christmas day Con ductor Enright was impatient to get to the end of the run where dinner was awaiting him Instead of waiting for the section men he stepped ahead of the train and touched a match to the rosinous weeds which burned like tinder In three minutes the track was clear and the train sped on its way Railroad men are wondering why they did not think of it before More Railroad
