An element of concern has been in
jected into the supreme judgeship situa
tion in Nebraska by the prompt resign
ation of Judge J J Sullivan the Demo
cratic appointee of the governor There
is a notion abroad that the opposition
expects to secure tne whole bunch with
the and of the new governor and next
legislature which will also be largely
Democratic
Governor Sheldon has cut the su
preme judgeship knot and made known
Monday the following appointments
W B Rose of Lincoln
J L Root of Plattsmouth
Jacob Fawcett of Omaha
J J Sullivan of Columbus
Of tho four three are Republicans
John J Sullivan being the Democrat
He is however one of the ablest and
solidest of Nebraska lawyers

In Memory
In sad but loving remembrance of our
dear mother Mrs Barbara Fleischman
who bade farewell to her loved ones
December 2 1907
Wo covered with flowers our mothers
tomb
But tbey will fade away
While the love of our mother in memory
shall bloom
Till we meet her some sweet day
Oh how doarly we did love her
Oh how hard to give her up
Bufan angel came down for her
And removed her from our flock
We think of you dear mother
At morning noon and night
Our heart is filled with sadness
Since God called you from our sight
But we know that you have gone to
slepp
In the arms of Jesus love
And wait for us who sadly mourn
In our Fathers homo above
Her daughters and eons

TREE DWELLING ANTS
South American Insect That Acts as
Plant Guardian
Ant defenders of plants and trees
are some of natures pretty marvels
The Cecropia adenopus is a remarka
ble tree of south Brazil widely dis
tributed through the tropics Its slen
der trunk is crowned with long leaves
at the ends of the branches
A few active ants run continually
along the branches and the leaves but
if the tree is shaken slightly an army
of ants rushes out by small apertures
ready for a savage assault on the in
truder The ant is the terrible guard
ian that the tree has retained to pro
tect it from its most formidable ene
my the leaf cutter ant
The defenders rarely leave Mieir re
treat where they live on small whitish
egg shaped bodies about one twelfth
of an inch long known as Muellers
corpuscles These are formed of deli
cate tissue rich in proteids and ail as
rations for the garrison of defender
ants to feed upon The curious ar
rangement by which entrance is made
to the hollow stem has been studied by
W Schimper
Just above the point of insertion of
each leaf extends nearly to the supe
rior node a superficial groove at whose
end is a rounded depression There
the tissue is thin like a diaphragm in
a tube and it also Is soft The hole
by which the ant enters is always
pierced at tins spot Tne ants seem
to have made their entrance through
the groove originally because it was
at the top In the course of this
plants further development natural se
lection augmented these natural ad
vantages so that finally the thin frail
diaphragm as it exists today was de
veloped Chicago Tcibune

Cheney were married the first day
they met They had corresponded for
some time a common friend who was
something of a matchmaker having
brought this about She was all his
fancy painted her but she was much
disappointed in his appearance so
much so that when he appeared be
fore her having proposed and been
accepted by letter she frankly told
him that although she married him
she was not in love with him Their
married life was long and happy and
the loss of his wife was a blow which
Greeley did not long survive
