conductor was a new man and was
moving rather slowly in collecting
fares The car was stopping and
starting frequently nnd without say
ing anything Mr du Pont who used
to be a trolley line manager took com
mand of the rear end of the car An
old woman with a market basket sig
naled the car and it stopped Picking
up the market basket Mr du Pont
helped the old woman on the car
Then he seized the bell rope ding ding
when the bell and the car started
Some one rose at the next crossing to
get off Once more the powder man
pulled the bell and the car stopped
The passenger alighted and ding ding
went the boll again Half a dozen
times the powder manufacturer gave
the signal to start and stop before the
car reached his street when he called
out goodby to the conductor and walk
ed to his office

took the last count he had disposed of
some 500 song writers poets and
freaks who had been to him to pro
pose a scheme to elect Mr Bryan
Secretary William Hayward of the
Republican committee has lost track
of the individuals who have been to
him with the same laudable desire
but it is safe to say that the number
was no less All of the applicants be
lieve that both parties have large rolls
of money to dispense for a new meth
od of convincing the people of the
merits of the two candidates and it Is
hard to dispossess them of the idea
The men in charge at the headquar
ters of both parties are adepts in the
art of making the visitors feel that
they are welcome but that it is just
an unlucky chance that prevented their
schemes from being adopted Some of
them are grievously disappointed be
cause they are undoubtedly sincere
and may have come a considerable
distance to give the respective party
leaders the benefit of their thoughts
It is many years since the sage of
Wolferts Roost David Bennett Hill
has taken an active part in a political
campaign In the two previous cam
paigns in which Mr William J Bryan
led his party Mr Hills attitude was
