Monday evening September 28th
Governor llerrick from Ohio an orator
and statesman of national reputation
will speak in the Menard opera house of
our city Ho appears under auspices of
of the national congressional committee
it being one of tho very limited number
of addresses ho will make in Nebraska
Friday October 2nd in tho evening
Governor Sheldon of Nebraska will spoak
in tho opera house and it is needless to
add that ho will have a large and en
thusiastic hearing
At all of these speeches and rallys
tho McCook High School band will play
Tho boys will surprise you too
Taken to Lincoln for Treatment
Volney Gunderman was taken to
Lincoln last Friday niht for treat J
ment for dypsomania Gunderman has
been in tho habit of spending quite all
of bis earnings for liquor and putting in
his spare times abusing his wife Efforts
have been repeatedly made to secure
his bettor treatment of his family with
out success He was brought before
Judge Moore last week Friday and
sentenced as above Tho wifes neck
still bore in court evidences of bis love
and affection where the husband and
father had choked her There are
several children in the family

Compulsory School Attendance
Two sections of the Nebraska compul
sory school law are quoted below The
law requires not only compulsory school
attendance but the appointment of
a truant officer to enforce the law
Subdivision 16 Sec 1 In city school
districts every person residing within
such districts who has legal control of
any child not less that 7 nor more than
16 years of age shall cause such child to
attend the public day school for the
full period each school year in which
the public day school is in session
Sec 2 Tho board of education in
cities shall appoint a truant officer
who shall qualify as police officers and
shall enforce this law in the wards and
shall have authority to apprehend and
take to the public day school any child
found in violation of this act

melon fest last Saturday evening with
Miss Millicent Slaby in the front of the
stage Miss Millicent left on Wednes
day morning for Ghicago to take up
special work during the ensuing term

Union Association Holds Convention In
McCook Two Days of This Week
Tho Red Willow County Union Sun
day School association held sessions in
McCook Monday and Tuesday of this
week several Sunday schools of the
county being represented but the at
tendance not being what was desired or
expected
H M Fteidley state secrotary and
Minna Stooker primary worker were
present and gave instructive addresses
and advise besides there were papers
and discupsions by local workers in ad
dition to some music numbers and the
usual program features
The sessionwas held in the Methodist
church
Wednesday afternoon the election of
officers and department superintendents
for the ensuing year was held with the

The event of the season in base ball
is scheduled to take place on the B
M diamond next Thursday afternoon
September 24th when the unmarried
members of McCook Lodge No 42
Knights of Pythias will contest for
supremacy in the great national game

kind which No 42 is responsible for the
first game having been played last year

The annual fair of Red Willow coun
ty agricultural society will be held at
Indianola next week September 22 25
While the officers of the fair are un-
warantedly modest about advertising
the same oven in the county newspapers
it is stated on some authority that the
fair will be one of the best ever held in
the county

Tho enrollment of the McCook public
schools this week reached a total of 015
At a meeting of the board of educa
tion Monday it was determined to em
ploy two additional teachers ono for
the first grade and ono for tho eighth
grade
Mrs Douglass has beon regularly em
ployed to teach tho South McCook pre
paratory grade
A room on the first floor of tho now
high school building in the northwest
corner of the structure is boing finished
up for use
Baby Kates Buried Here
May Gwondolin baby daughter of
Mr and Mrs E J Kates died at their
homo in Lincoln Wednesday morning
of this week after an illness of several
weeks Tho remains wero brought hero
last night on No 5 and wero buried in
Longview cemetery services being con
ducted at tho home of T B Campbell
at ten oclock by Rev G B Hawkes
assisted by Rev M B Carman
Mr and Mrs Kates have most tender
and spontaneous sympathy in their be
reavement and sorrow tho death of
their first born and only after weeks
