curbing etc for the fiscal year were accepted and placed on file and the city clerk was instructed to advertise for bids See elsewhere in this issue Tho sewer committee under advice and instruction of the city engineer were authorised to open and place in proper position a catch basin on main sewer leading to tho river The ordinance committee was in truded to have the ordinances of the city revised for publication Bill of W II Rankin for S1575 was allowed at 14 00 Death ot Mrs Carrie P Mitchell Mrs Carrie P Mitchell died at the home of her daughter Mrs Evans in Sedalia Mo Wednesday evening Her son E J Mitchell of our city was called to her bedside leaving for Sedalia on Monday night consequently arrived in time to see his mother alive The body was expected to arrive in Indianola on No 13 and to be buried this afternoon Funeral services were held at Sedalia Mr and Mrs C W Barnes and Mrs E J Mitchell went down to Indianola this moruing to attend the burial The bereaved ones have the OFFICERS The McCook Commercial Club Lines Up for Another Year of Boosting ENCOURAGES CHAUTAUQUA Will Support the Junior Normal School as Usual Plans Made to Entertain the Omaha Commercial Club Next Monday Morning A special or adjourned meeting of the McCook Commercial club was held Monday evening at which time the first order of business was the selection of fifteen members of the board of di rectors as follows by ballot A Barnott F A Pennell L W McConnell J E Kolley Barney Hofer II P Sutton J E Ludwick C L Fahnestock G S Scott F M Kimmell W B Mills II G Phelps V M Lewis C H Boyle L Suess The matter of the proposed or contem plated RedpathChautauqua for McCook this summer Augusc 22 30 was pre sented by their representative Mr Pet tit and warmly supported by Messrs Barnett and Carman A resolution was passed pledging the support and encour agement of the club in the enterprise Messrs Carman Barnett and Kelley were chosen a committee to select grounds for the Chautauqua which will be held within the city limits and near the business district The only require ment of the chautauqua management is that the people of McCook shall assist in the matter of securing season tickets and this will be handled by a committee who will canvass the city Already some 200 tickets have been pledged and it is expected to bring the number up to 500 or over Twenty en tertainments will be given by first class talent Season tickets are 2 Boost the chautauqua David Diamond presented the matter of attempting to secure the location here of the Leavitt beet sugar factory which will be sold at public sale last of this month It was not thought wise to at tempt anything in this direction on ac count of lack of time The approaching Junior Normal school session was mentioned and discussed The city will be expected to assist in a financial way by subscribing for the en tertainment course tickets in connection with the school This has been done willingly and liberally in past years and will no doubt be done this season The visit of the Omaha Commercial club here next Monday morning from 7 to 9 oclock came on for action Messrs Sutton Pennell Kimmell Clapp and Kelley were named to make some arrangements for advertising dec oration and entertainment It is hoped that every business man will be at his place of business early that morning that the business section will look its cleanest and prettiest and that an extra effort shall be made to show the Omaha fellows that we are wide awake out here in McCook The club then adjourned and the board of directors went into session for the - 2sBk McCOOK RED WILLOW COUNTY NEBRASKA FRIDAY EVENING MAY 22 1908 THE ELECTRIC LIGHT PLANT DAMAGED Fire Causes a Loss of Perhaps a Thous and Dollars Between three and four oclock Mon day morning fire damaged tho McCook Electric Light Cos plant to tho extont of about a thousand dollars Tho company has been annoyed for some days by spontaneous combustion in tho coal sheds and the fire is chargeable to that source several explosions of coal gas spreading tho flames and rendering the work of fire fighting difficult The first gas explosion is said to have raised the roof of the coal shed several feet Tho flames were confined to tho coal shed and boiler room tho roofs being burned entirelly off of both of thorn The gas producer is in this section of the plant but escaped damage Tho piping is all injured Both boilers aro slightly damaged and the stacks of both boilers considerably so by sinking down into the masonry Loss of coal is considerable In a very short time however Man ager Scott bad a force of men at work clearing away the debris and commenc ing the labor of rebuilding and repair ing so they were able to give current for tho business part of the city Mon day night although the residence part could not be supplied The fire fighting was done largely by the members of the irregular night hawks brigade but effectively being materially assisted by good water pres
