of Nelson Reminded Him of How Arkness Come Off tho Main Yard The Blood Red Sky Without a Cloud That Foretells a Storm Crude perhaps and curious the out come of a life apart sailormen have yet an appreciation of the arts writes David W Bone in the Manchester Guardian Once in the Walter gallery I was looking at The Death of Nelson There -was a man with the look of a seaman standing near lie had a slight smell of drink and was chewing tobac co He too was interested in the pic ture and recognizing me as seaman like he said something and we got to talking about Nelson and his times about ships and pictures Bgad mate them fellers the painters he meant knowed what they was a doin Look at that ere glim lan tern Looks as its trimmin was for got wen they brought th admiral down An them eyes point ing to a wounded seaman in the near loiegrounu tnem s in eyes o poor Arkness wot come off th main yard las voyage an struck th fife rail full on He told me of the accident how it happened and by his eyes and rude simple speech I saw it all As plain bo fore me as the figure of the stricken seaman I saw Arkness come off the main yard clutching wildlv at the sheets and lifts as lie fell I heard him strike the rail with a sickening thud and lie stretched I saw the running figures on the deck and e never larsted th night We buried im out there Taltal it was said mv sneaker involuntarily twisting a shoirider to an imaginary southwest There was a sea picture a ship com ing up to the Isle of Wight clean curving sails a good sense of move ment and a fine breezy atmosphere Jest wot it is said my friend omeward bound Let or go boys a burst of enthusiasm that made some visitor glance around alarmed Ome ward bound it is There were other fine pictures but we did not feel that we had a right to do more than look at them and admire With sea pictures it was different They were our world and who had the right to criticise the way a sea was moving off the sky if we had not Too often had we watch ed anxious eyed for a break in the clouds not to know the way of wind on the water the scud of a cloud breaking free in a welcome shift Well we knew the curve of a standing sail and the relation it bore to the sense of movement For a city of the sea Liverpool has no great representation of her fore most industry on her chamber walls Sea pictures have apparently no at traction for her chiefest citizens There was little call for sea critics down stairs so we went to an exhibition of modern art in the upper galleries Here we found ourselves properly con fronted Setting Sail After a Blow it was a large canvas a ship pitching neaviiy m tlie swell of a recent gale and the crew putting the canvas on her It held a great message for my mate black smoke and an ever throb- bing screw had not yet dulled his sea fancy He was highly pleased Them seas wot ye gets off th riate no wanted to show some word of cheer to swing his right hand to the left shoul der in seamanlike admiration but the cold gray eye of a tall hatted official was upon us Huh sailors and there was a group of young ladies near by worshiping at the shrine of a corporation purchase so he contented himself by nudging me furiously Thats wot I calls a picture he said A sunset over water claimed our at tention A blood red sky with no clouds only a slight density near the horizon I said it was remarkable perhaps unreal Thats where ye aint in it mister Look a here If ye wos t take all th colors in th lock er sos ye ad lots o red an yeller in yed find a sky t match it Aint ye never card o what them dagos calls blood o Chris them dagos wot loads ye ballest in th Plate I had not heard Well its a sky like that an it comes afore one of them pamperos Min I wos lyin in Monte Video oncet an we ad a sky all blood red an never a cloud an th uVhiu boats wos all com in in not rowin same s mo an you iul do them shoviif th oars s if they wos pushin a barrel- He pat int a dark corner and said something an thats wot coes out n tin u ikli wot they calls th biood Chris It was an impressionist picture that annoyed my mate an impression of a scene in dock with masts and funnels and hulls all mixed up The coloring was good but the ships might have been ninepins or ogs boxes or any thing At first lie was perplexed then amused then indignant Oh he said Whats this Ships bgad or Im a Dutchman He burst into a fit of rude laughter Ships it is mister an look at them tawpsl yards Ships wi tawpsl yards below the main an a hangmans gibbet fer th mlzzen gaff Them fellers s got some cheek mate Thats wot I calls it cheek t be paintin things like that Oly sailor Look at them TURNING OF THE WORM His Plain Blunt Straight to tho Point Talk to His Wife Mrs Lambert I think we will have to cut down expenses remarked Mr Lambert timidly To his intense surprise she made no reply Then he grew bolder And I am certainly of the opinion that you are spending too much money on gowns and hats Again no answer His bravery jump ed up another notch And Mrs Lambert I must say fur thermore that we will have no more teas or reeentjons Silence Mr Lambert grows daring courageous It is simply an outrage the way you lavishly expend my hard earned mon ey You have no consideration and al low your extravagant ideas to carry you off your Teer Do you realize that wo aro living beyond our means No answer Do you know that I am making 100 a month and you are deliberately spending 200 Cant you see the fam ily is bound to land In the poorhouseV bilence Mr Lamberts fortitude Is unbounded I have stood your impositions long enouLh Airs Lambert Do you under stand You have henpecked me until life is now unbearable Now I intend to take hold of the reins I will man age affairs and you will obey There was a sudden crash then a yell Mr Lamberts head came into contact with the bedpost as Mrs Lam bert shook him furiously and she ex claimed Cant you keep your mouth shut when you are asleep What in the world are you dreaming about any way It is simply barbarous the way you disturb my rest after I work sc hard all day keeping the house in or der And you know I am worn out from tea this afternoon yet And Lambert realized it avus all a dream and began nursing the slowly swelling bump on his head Bohemian Magazine MUSIC LOVING NAPLES It Has the Poorest and Happiest People In the World It is estimated that a quarter of a million people in Naples live from hand to mouth and there are hundreds of children who subsist out of the gar bage boxes and avIio sleep in churches and on doorsteps The taxes in Italy to provide war ships and to keep the nation on a Avar footing with the other powers are real ly stupendous There is a tax on ev erything says the Delineator grain in V field fruit on the vine old bottles T- and foodstuffs are very dear On labor is cheap For the very poor ni r is a luxury unheard of and even macaroni is too dear to be indulged in often There are any number of per ambulating street kitchens where va rious kinds of soup cakes and fruits are sold in portions costing 1 cent And yet these people seem very happy Bands of musicians are always play ing in the streets the guitar and the mandolin are to be heard everywhere on the boats in the hotels and the stranger is lulled to sleep by a soft serenade under his balcony The story teller thrives in Xanles as there are so many idlers there lie col lects a little crowd around him and proceeds in the most dramatic way gesticulating wildly and working his face into the most excruciating ex pressions to relate stories of adven ture or other events much to the edi fication of his hearers who to show tlieir appreciation are often betrayed into giving a sou which might haw been better spent for bread or polenta The public letter writer Is another street dignitary of importance and in great demand especially with timid and buxom maids of all work who have themselves neglected to learn the art of writing Of such the public letter writer holds all the secrets of their loves and is often their adviser as well as amanuensis Pineapple Juice Garlic eaten raw will cure a cold in the head grip or influenza in the first stages but in cases where prejudiced people refuse to test its virtues Irish moss lemonade made after the well known flaxseed lemonade recipe and taken for both meat and drink stands next on the list Pineapple juice will relieve inflamma tion of the throat in the most advanced and chronic eases and will cure all or dinary attacks In both membranous croup and diphtheria pure pineapple juice either raw or from the canned fruit will cure when the entire apothe cary shop Iras been tried and fo md wanting National Magazine Vcn Kutiens Misery Very bad waa ilia ft of Ulricli oj Ilutten ic of the rcatest
