CHURCH TIME
Quaint Ways of the Early Dutch Set
tlers In the New Vorld
As early as 1G59 the Dutch settlers
at Kingston N Y erected -with their
own hands a little church building and
dedicated it the following year When
a regular minister arrived from Hol
land the same year writes Mrs Nellie
Urner Walllngton in Historic Churches
of America he found himself a dom
inie with a membership of but six
teen souls and a salary paid In wheat
which was then legal tender among
these humble tillers of the soil
In 1G94 a bell wsis imported and gave
such pleasure to the members of the
little parish that they used it to an
nounce the hours for meals for the
farmers of the neighborhood
The observance of one quaint cus
tom was reminiscent of their former
life in Holland the announcement by
the gray haired sexton between the
ringing of the first and last church
bells that the hour for service had ar
rived
From door to door he traveled rap
ped loudly and cried Church time
Notices of all kinds whether of fu
nerals christenings weddings or mer
rymakings were handed first to the
sexton who in turn gave tliein to the
clerk who stuck them on the end of
the bamboo pole Avhich he kept for
that purpose and reached them up to
the dominie
At the termination of the service as
in other Dutch churches the deacons
took up the collection with long poles
having little velvet bags hung on the
ends and a tinkling bell to wake the
sleepers to the responsibilities of a
contribution
THE DUCK SH0VER
A Man Who Gets Things on the Bounce
and the Nod
An amusing dialogue occurred be
tween Judge AVillis K C and a plain
tiff who sued a man for the value of
a quantity of grain supplied
His honor said he had received a
letter from the defendant who said he
could offer only half a crown a month
That continued his honor will take
six years to get rid of the debt
Plaintiff emphatically would will
ingly forgive a poor man but when
you find he is a swanker and doing
every one in the neighborhood it puts
your back up Laughter We have
to cut things very fine in order to set
a shilling or two and then these gen
try come swanking about the coun
try as if they were toffs I am told
by others that he is nothing more than
a duck shover Laughter
nis Ilonor A what shover Loud
laughter
Plaintiff Duck shover your honor a
man who gets things on the bounce
and the nod Renewed laughter
His Honor You mean a man who
gets people to let him have things on
credit by representations that are not
correct Is that what you mean to
convey by your big phrases duck
shover and so forth Laughter
Plaintiff Thats it duck shover and
swanker Renewed laughter

For Husbands

This is called he said the In

the very oldest papyrus writings
known It gives among other things
advice to husbands and that advice is
as good today is It ever was Listen
And he read
If thou be wise furnish thy house
well
Woo thy wife ever and never
quarrel with her
Nourish her daintily
Deck her out for fine dress is her
greatest delight
Feed her upon sweets
Perfume her
Make her glad with praise
Adorn her with jewels feathers
and the skins of beasts as sumptuously
as thy purse will suffer
How Much He Thought About Her
They were on their way to the the
ater and she was tremulously happy
She felt that the words she longed to
hear would he spoken that night and
the idea made her almost dizzy with
delight
Mr Sampson she said softly why
do you wear that bit of string upon
your finger
Oh replied Mr Sampson taking it
off that was to remind me of my en
gagement with you tonight
It wasnt much but it was enough to
take away the delightful dizziness

HOME MADE DRESSING TABLE
Effective Drapery to Cover Up Simple
Contrivance
To demonstrate the beauty of
drapery was a clever little dressing
table simply made and something
which could easily be made at home
The table or loaf portion was a hoard
fitted closely to the wall with brackets
at each end It was rounded in front
giving the half oval appearance This
top was padded slightly and covered
with a soft white denim Back of it
the wall was covered with pale green
silkateen on which rested a long nor
now mirror the frame made white
with white varnish paint Over this
was neatly draped a canopy of mod
erately dark green silkateen showing
small rosebuds The cover was draped
at the top nnd sides Around the
stand portion was a pretty flounce or
deep mine of the same flowered ma
terial which Avas hung on pink
crocheted rings It was divided in tho
center front and a few waists could ho
hung on the screw eyes fastened be
neath the shelf portion The only
difficulty one would meet in making
this bit of ornamental furniture would
be in secuiely fastening the shelf to
the wall The man of the house or a
carpenter could soon do the work

Ho for the Cutaway Coat
All hail to the cutaway coat Noth

at present nor is there any other in

times in just four at back front and
sides respectively while others are

the easiest matter
tight fitting half or three quarter old
fashioned coat into a smart up-to-date
wrap by simply cutting the lower edge
into points and then inserting a smart
looking waistcoat and adding cuffs of
some pretty contrasting material The
cuffs should be cut star shaped on
outer edge
Dummy Wooden Gloves
One of the most useful toilet assets
of the toilet table is that of a pair of
dummy wooden hands After washing
castor gloves it will be found that
they keep their shape excellently
while at the same time they will be
prevented from shrinking if they are
slipped over the wooden shapes and
dried in this way A night on the
glove tree is as good for kid or suede
gloves as is a corresponding time on
boot trees for leather footgear says
