log rolling and race meet to be held in Mc Cook September 26 2 and 28 The log rolling events will take up all of the fore noons and evenings Band concerts athletic contest exhibi tion drills speaking and street sports Two bands have been secured We have been fortunate in securing the McCook band and the Palisade band of twenty pieces will accompany tho delegation and camp from that place Arrangements have being made to run the Imperial train on Saturday night permitting the visitors living along that line to return home Saturday evening At the State Fair most of the interest in the track events centered on the ex hibitions given by the horse known as Doctor Tom The Guideless Wonder who has a record of 210 with out a driver Doctor Tom has been secured for two exhibitions during the race meet here In order to entertain visitors in ad dition to the log rolling we are making arrangements to have a platform erected on the street for free vaudeville per formances The usual train service to and from the grounds has been arranged for The first train will leave the depot at one oclock each day and trains will be run as frequently as required to accom modate the crowd The first race will start promptly at 130 We have em ployed Frank James of Missouri fame as starter Mr James is a professional race starter whoso services are in great demand and you may rely on his hav ing each race start on schedule time The committio desire the business houses to close but that matter will be left with the business men for action With more than forty camps under the jurisdiction of this Log Rolling As sociation all interested in the success of this meeting with the driving park meeting offering over 83000 00 in cash purses well advertised all over the east ern part of this state for all tho lines of conference work and business was on in earnest Tho Rev Dr J W Jennings of Kan sas City representing the publishing in terests of tho church addressed the con ference Tho publishing work of tho church pajs this year of its profits 20000000 to the conferences for the support of worn out preachers 75300 of which comes to tho West Nebraska The educational interests of the church woro ably presented by Rev Dr P J Maveety of Kansas City Dr M also addressed the meeting of the Womans Home Missionary society in the after noon and the anniversary at night As he is ono of tho connectioual officers ho was compelled to leave us immediately after the evening service Dr C C Wilson presidiug elder of the Holdrege district reported his official work and was followed by per sonal reports from the elders in his dist rict Of these one Rev J W Taylor resigned his office and withdrew from the church AH these reports showed a steady advance in the work and interests of the church MAVEETY society referred to above then an evan gelistic service led by the Kev Dr Brushinghamof Chicago In the even ing Dr Maveety spoke to a crowded audience In the speakers of today we have had singular variety Bishop Warren long in educational work more than a score of years in the Episcopacy has presided over conferences in all parts of the world our ministers using thirty four different languages He is the self cultured pol ished gentleman and cultured scholar forceful in address but most genial in manner can do things but with utmost kindness Dr Jenniigs is an eminent minister but in his office is the straight forward man of affairs and master of his business Drs Maveety and Brush ingham are Americans by adoption each showing something of the lands be yond the sea but both full of force each for his own work The people of McCook are favored in having such men visit them THURSDAY This has been an eventful day in the work of the conference After a rousing ad iress ou Faith in God the True and the Spurious by the Rev A L Umple oy the Bishop took tho chair The Kev Allen Chamberlain presiding elder of the North Platte district made writ ten report of his official work on the district after which the other elderson the district made individual reports There has been marked advance in all the lines of church work Tho Rev L H Shumate presiding elder of the Kearney district read a report of his official work which report was also full of encouragement Now came the matter of the admission of candidates into full connection in the conference This is made a very serious and impressive service After devotions led by Bishop Warren tho class of can didates was called and tho bishop made an address that fairly bristled with tho points for which tho bishop is noted Tho church and Dr and Mrs McLaughlin of tho Methodist hospital in Omaha John Madely was received into tho con ference from tho Presbyterian church After other routine work a ballot was taken for delegates to the general confer once Tho result was not announced On Thursday afternoon was held in tho Christian church a meeting of the Preachers Aid Societya Mutual Insur ance Company It may be called main tained by the preachers for their mut ual assistance The meeting of the Wo mans Foreign Missionary Society held at tho M E church was addressed by Miss McKnight a missionary returned from India After this Dr Brushing ham held an Evangelistic Service that was very largely attended and was very interesting In the evening was held the annual meeting of the Conference Missionary Society presided over by the Rev R II Thompson and address ed by Dr ERFulkerson who for some years labored as i missionary in China and was thence transferred to Japan Dr Fulkersons address was a power ful one dealing with a subject that i comin more and more yearly not tj - - - simply to tho notice but to tho concern of tho American people There is a peril from tho yellow man ho has been shamefully mistreated by tho so CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT Claudia B Hatcher tho daughter of Dick Hatcher of Fritsch precinct was born iu Illinois July 30 1880 When one year old sho moved with her parents to Eastern Nebraska and two years afterwards to Red Willow county where sho has resided to the present time Miss Hatcher received her education in tho In dianola schools and graduated with the class of 1897 The two years following she taught the North Star school dis trict No 13 and for the next three suc cessive years she was employed in the intermediate department of the Indian ola schools resigning the offer of tho fourth term to pursue higher studies The years of 03 and 01 Miss Hatcher attended the stato university receiving credit for more than two years work and the highest recommendations from all departments in which sho wis regis tered On her return from the Univer sity she was elected principal of the school at Miuco Ind Ty and last year was teacher of the 6th A and 7th B grades in the McCook schools beinjr re employed for tho present year but re signing to accept tte nomination for county superintendent Miss Quick our present county super intendent in writing a recommendation for Miss Hatcher when making an ap plication for a school says the follow ing I have known Miss Hatcher person ally for years and know her to be a Christian young woman careful in con duct neat in Neb Sept 1G Special X VanSickleof Orleans was killed Satur day at Alma by an engine switching Gullmar Bros show Mr VauSijKie was a bridge builder and had his car on tho track at Alma Gollmar Bros showed at this place Saturday and in the evening while reloading the cars the switch engine shoved tho car accupied by Mr VanSickle back on the side track and uncoupled the same Mr VanSickle was sitting on the steps on tho outside of the car and in uncoupl ing tho same he was jarred off and fell beneath the cars The train ran over him severing his head from the bod and also cutting off his legs just below the knee3 Mr VanSickle is an old emplojee of the Burlington having worked for that company for nearly twenty five years in building bridges He leaves a wifo and several childreu who
