Higher Education Was tho Ruin
Lying
It was said of Dr Johnson that he
always talked as though he were tak
ing an oath He detested the habit of
lying or prevaricating In the slight
est degree and would not allow his
servants to say he was not at home if
he was A servants strict regard
for the truth said he must be weak
ened by such a practice If I accus
tom my servant to tell a He for me
have I not reason to apprehend that
he will tell it for himself A strict
adherence to truth the doctor consid
ered as a sacred obligation and in re
lating the smallest anecdote he would
not allow himself the minutest addi
tion to embellish his story
The Transformed Pythagorean
Some undergraduates once wished to
play a practical joke upon a man who
was a disciple of Pythagoras so one
day when he was a little sleepy by
reason of the amount of brandy and
soda that he had imbibed his friends
smeared him with honey and rolled
him in the inside of a feather bed
When the disciple of Pythagoras got
up in the morning he looked in the
looking glass at himself and said slow

ought to have dined tonight with the

dont make yourself uneasy I am

these words the visitor prepared to

At first profusely grateful Warren

To Cure Blushing
A great many men blush said a
physician some so painfully that they
come to me to be cured
The cure I recommend is an odd
one It is the abandonment of over
heavy clothing especially of wool
en socks Amazing it is how many
male blushers have a predilection for
thick socks of wool
But some blushers wear light
enough clothes To them I can only
recommend a nerve treatment I ad
vise them to make speeches at ban
quets to be witnesses in murder trials
to go to teas and dances to develop in
short the nerve as a wrestler develops
his muscle
Blushing is a difficult disorder to
cure As a rule it passes away of it
self when the victim reaches his thirty

In nearly every country until com

been subject to imprisonment After
the panic of 1S25 101000 writs for
debt were Issued in England In 1830
7000 persons were sent to Ljiidon
prisons for debt and on Jan 1 1S 10
1700 persons were held for debt in
England and Wales 1000 In Ireland
nnd less than 100 in Scotland From
time to time modifications in the laws
governing the imprisonment of debtors
have been made so that fewer debtors
are Imprisoned for this crime each
year
In 1820 there were 3000 debtors in
prison in Massachusetts 10000 In New
York 7000 in Pennsylvania 3000 in
Maryland and a like proportion in oth

jailed for debts of 1 The law pro
viding for the Imprisonment of men
who could not pay their debts was
shown to be impracticable by statistics
taken from Philadelphia where in 1S2S
there were 10S5 debtors imprisoned for
debts amounting to 25000 The ex

finement was 3G2000 which was paid
by the city and the amount recovered
by this method was 205

fully enforced until 1839 New York

WIFE OR CHILD WHICH
An Ingenious Problem With Two In
teresting Equations
Some time ago George was bragging
about never having told a lie and he
said lie never would An Irishman
hearing the assertion made a wager
with George that he could make him
tell a lie in two minutes
So Pat began Supposing you and
your little child and her friend were
out in a boat for a row the boat sud
denly capsized and you were all
thrown into the water Now which
child would you save asked Pat
Well answered George under the
circumstances I should save my own
in preference to any one elses child
Very good answered Pat Now
suppose you and your wife and child
were out for a row and the boat again
capsized Now which of them would
you save your wife or your child
After a thoughtful pause George an
swered that he would save his wife
There you are cried Pat You
said at first that you would rather save
your child in preference to any one
elses but now you say that you would
