systems recently read a paper before
the American Institute of Electrical
Engineers describing a new wireless
receiver of which he is the investor
It is asserted that this receiver is far
more sensitive than any of those in
vented earlier and instead of utilizing
a liquid It- employs a sensitive gas
Dr De Forest has been eminently suc
cessful In science but in love he has
been less fortunate He courted his wife
by the radio telegraphic system and
it is said asked the important question
several times by means of the appara
tus in his own house and the instru
ments he set up in the apartment
where livedv the young lady he ad
mired She learned to talk by the
wireless system but It was some time
before she used it to say Yes Their
happiness was brief for a short time
ago an application was made for the
dissolution of the marriage
CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA
The Forbes Robertsons and Their
Portrayal o These Characters
Shakespeare wrote a play about
Antony and Cleopatra but it re
mained for George Bernard Shaw the
English playwright who has had the
hardihood to criticise the Bard of
Avon to wrrite a drama entitled Cae

ed at a New York theater by Forbes
Robertson the noted English actor
and his wife Gertrude Elliott sis
ter of Maxine Elliott It is one
of the principal subjects of conversa
tion in theatrical circles both on ac
count of the ability shown by Mr and
Mrs Robertson in the Interpretation
of the leading roles and because of the
unconventional way in which the
dramatist has treated the characters
Forbes Robertson is considered the

EDWARD H HARRIMAN

CcntrnI and IIIh Personality
The contest for the control of the Il
linois Central railroad which has re
cently heen a leading subject of Wall
street discussion resulted in further
increase in the power of Edward II
Hnrrimau as a railroad king By the
election of Mr Harrimans candidate
for the presidency of the road James
T llarahau to succeed Stuyvesaut
Fish It is believed that a close alli
ance will be established between the
Union Tacific and the Illinois Central
This would be in accord with the ful
fillment of Mr Ilarrimaus long cher
ished plan for a system extending from
the Atlantic to the Pacific In this
great plan the Illinois road was the
one link missing to complete a line of
track from Xew York to San Francisco
and Portland Ore from the great
lakes to the gulf and from the gulf
to the Pacific again The contest is
mixed up with others connected with
the great insurance investigation of
last year in which Uarriman and
Fish found themselves ranged on oppo
site sides in the matter of changes in
the Mutual Life Insurance company
It was predicted at the time that Mr
Harrimau would retaliate on Mr Fish

The incident of Mr Harrimans re
