decorated with autumn leaves wheat corn and chrysanthemums A choir of 14 voices with the congregation sang old hymns tho choir rendering a splendid anthem Mrs George HThomas satg a solo The Model Church effectively The pastor preached from the textThe hoary head is a crown of glory when on tho side of righteousness A Bible 153 years old was on the pulpit the proper ty of William Weygint tho oldest person present who is nearly 87 yoars of age There were 40 people over 50 and under 60 years of age 9 over 60 and under 70 6 over 70 and under 80 one 84 and one 87 Tho oldest person in town is William Bailey 88 years old After the service the members of the congregation came forward and exchanged greetings with the old folks to their great pleasure Sunday School Convention A Sunday School convention will be held in Danbury November 7th after noon and evening State Secretary Steidley to be present upon both oc casions and to deliver addresses These -alone will be well worth going to hear The convention will embrace the Sun day Schools of Lebanon Danbury and Marion There will be an interesting and instructive set of subjects presented in papers and di3cussed All interested in the great and vital work of the Sun day Schools should make an effort some sacrifice if need be to be present There will be delegates from McCook Xndianola and elsewhere present Union Temperance Meeting The union temperance meeting held in the Baptist church last Sunday even ing under the auspices of the Anti Saloon league drew a crowded house Rev Green of tho Baptist church ad dressed the meeting being introduced in a neat little speech by the president of the local organization Howe Smith Rev Green removed his gloves and went after the liquor traffic in his character istic energetic fashion to the satisfac tion and enjoyment of many of his hearers The doctrine of temperance and the practice of the same are needed in McCook and the Anti Saloon league is making an effort in that direction Speed its efforts Reduced Rate For the Kilties Manager Bixler has secured from the Burlington company and announces that a reduced fare of one and one third has been given from all points for par ties of ten or more who desire to hear the famous Kilties band in the Bixler opera house November 13th This ought to largely increase the attendance on that occasion Pass the word aloiuj McCook Souvenirs WELLES Hears the Call and Passes on to His Reward While Asleep Early Monday morning the citizens of McCook were startled and saddened by the news of the sudden death of Dr A P Welles during the earlier hours of the morning Mrs Welles was with the doctor until shortly before midnight when she retired leaving him feeling as well as usual Early in the following morning she called the doctor whom she found sitting up in bed dead Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist ohurch by Rev Carman Thursday afternoon many friends pay ing a last tribute by their presence and in a wealth of flowers Tho members of the G A R post and circle attended but there was no ceremony There goes out to Mrs Welles in this sudden and great sorrow the deepest sympathy of the people of this city where her husband has been so long known and respected Dr Alonzo P Welles was bom in Steuben county N Y October 29 1815 where he lived the early years of his life In 1801 October 6 he enlisted in the Union army as a member of company I 83th regiment of New York volunteers In April 1364 ho and his father were taken prisoners near Plymouth N C and they remained in the prisons of Charleston and Florence S C and in Andersonville until paroled from the latter on March 1st 1865 Receiving an honorable discharge as sergeant a few hours after his parole he went to pro cure some coffee for his father Upon returning from his errand the father could not be found and for ten years no word came of him when the war depart ment at Washington sent the doctor his fathers pocket diary with the informa tion the father was dead and buried somewhere in the south land the exact place being still unknown The mother in York state not hearing from husband or son for long while and deeming them both dead moved with her people to Illinois where the son afterwards found her After the war he attended and was graduated from the HahnemanniumCol lege of Medicine Chicago where he practiced one year after graduation when he moved to Aurora Nebraska After a short residence there he went to Colo rado and thence to McCook in the spring of 1888 residing here until his death He was a member of the American In stitution of Homeopathy and of the Ne braska State Medical association whose meetings he has annually attended until the last year Two years since he was the associations president He has been master workman of the A O U W and medical examiner of the order and of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engin eers Was several times a delegate to the grand lodge of Nebraska Held ins urance in both the Workman and the Degree of Honor Was prominent in G A R circles commander and adjutant at different times Became a member of the McCook Methodist church in Sept 1861 and for years was chorister and held other official positions in church Was Sunday school superintendent at the time of his death Was a member of the Brotherhooh of St Paul and the Anti Saloon leagues first president Departed was an educated cultured patriotic Christian gentleman Some two years since he was compell ed by increasing disabilities to discon tinue the active practice of medicine go ing to Lincoln for an operation and treatment twice to Chicago and Lake Michigan summer resorts once to Ex celsior Springs Mo Since his return home about a month since he has rap idly failed although he was out on the street as late as last Saturday His was a complication of diseases asthma dropsy and heart trouble Mrs Welles had been reading to him unti eleven oclock Sunday night when he seemed as well as usual Early Monday morning she found him sitting up in bed as she at first supposed asleep Repeat ed calls brought the said conviction that his spirit had winged its flight Mb life had gone out quietly and peacefully in his and an Egyptian booth where the gentleman were subjected to the art of palmistry was an added charm Red was the predominating color in the tasteful dining room decorations Can dles shed their soft
