fourth annual picnic of the Old Settlers
of Eed Willow county will be held at
Brookside farm Red Willow September
53th 1006 This is on the well known
farm of Mrs Phebe Taylor It is hoped
this gathering will be as largely attended
as possible growing more interesting as

New England conservatory of music at
Boston arrived close of last week and
will shortly open a studio here
Mr and Mrs H D Stewart re
turned home last Saturday morning on
No 2 from their wedding trip to Utah
They are temporarily making their home
with the brides parents
J E Kelley and E J Wilcox are
expected home today from Excelsior

have been spending the week in Ober
lin Kansas Engineer Viersen went
over after the family Tuesday return

Toland Colo last Saturday morning
after spending a number of weeks in the
mountains and spent several days here
with Mr Sawyer before going on to Lin

Mrs Sylvester Cordeal returned
home Tuesday morning on No 2 from

ford who accompanied her home for a
few days Mrs Whiteford departed on
13 yesterday for Denver where she
will meet her husband and they will

rived here Wednesday night from
Pueblo Colo to renfain about two
months Carl who has been in charge
of the engine department of the Colo
rado Fuel and Iron Co has recently
been promoted to Master Mechanic at
Sunrise Wyo for the Colorado West
ern railroad entering upon his new
duties this week
Miss Hazel Merle and Miss Viva
Phelan were the clever and sociable
hostesses to a party of young people
Monday evening of this week at an
event given in honor of Miss Alice Ben
nett of Omaha The social features of
the evening transpired at the home of
Miss Viva the gastronomic gayety at
the Merle domicile where light refresh
ments were served with tasteful decora
tions of chrysanthemums in purple and
white
Opening of School
School will begin in all departments
Monday morning September 17th The
arrangement of grades in the different
buildings will remain as heretofore
Children promoted to or belonging in
the Preparatory First Second or Third
grades who live in the western half of
town will attend the west building in
its new location The city hall school
will have Third A and Fourth B classes
Children over five years of ago and pro
perly vaccnated will be entered in the
Preparatory classes of the east west and
south buildings according to residence
Their parents should present them di
rectly to their teachers No beginners
will bo admitted however after October
5th Examinations for new irregular
or conditioned pupils will be held in the
assembly room of the East ward build
ing Friday September 14th at 9 oclock

Democratic Senatorial Convention
The Democratic Senatorial Conven
tion of the 29th District will be held at
McCook Neb at 2 p m Tuesday Sept
25th 1906 to place in nomination a can
didate for senator and to transact such
other business as may come before the
convention
The appointment of delegates will be
the same as that made for the state

Death of Baby Bell
Little Garnet Gertrude the 5-year-old
daughter of Mr and Mrs P M
Bell died on Wedneaday afternoon of
this week Services were conducted at
Riverview cemetery by Rev A F Green
of the Baptist church The parents have
much deep sympathy in this sorrow

McCook was strongly represented at
the Woodman gathering in Beaver City
this week and will be the next location
for the annual log rolling early next
fall Beaver City retains the cup but
McCook won the team drill prize and
the wood chopping contest

Andrew Phillips was buried last Sat
urday afternoon from the Methodist
church under the auspices of J K

Andrew Phillips was born in North
ampton county Penn May 22 1845
At the age of 13 years he accompanied
his parents in their removal to Louisa
county Iowa In that state January
1st 1874 he was united in marriage with
Katie Bufilngton and to them wore born
one son and two daughters Georgo W
Nellie and Ida In 1884 the family
moved to Hayes county this state where
he homesteaded and lived until 1900
when McCook became their home and
where he spent the remainder of his
days Deceased served throughout the
war of the rebellion in company F 25th
Iowa regimeut His was an industrious
Christian life
