time keep the main line open The preliminary work on the yard ex tension is now in progress -v WHITE SLIPPERS AND OXFORDS Operator and Mrs Harry Phillippi of Culberteon visited relatives near Mc Cook Sunday last Mr and Mrs W E DeWitt returned home Tuesday night from their visit to Chicago and other points of about a month Word was received last Friday by Mr F M Pennington that his son Allen had been seriously injured in a wreck the day boforp Mr and Mrs Pennine ton left Saturday evening for Raton N M to where Allen is making his home Later advices are that the wreck was caused by a defective rail the engine and five coaches were piled up in a promiscuous heap Allen was the only person injured his fireman escaped without injury Allens foot was caught in the wreckage and his leg to the knee was so badly burned that it had to be amputated just above the knee He stood the operation first rate and at last report was getting along fine The wreck occurred about 25 miles south of La Junta Allen has been at the throt tle for some time and this is his first serious injury His brother Ira who is firing on the Burlington out of McCook went down to see him Lebanon corres pondentDanbury News Commercial Club Holds Meeting The members of the McCook Com mercial club were in important session Tuesday evening of this week with a fair attendance Proceedings of last gathering were passed upon also a few claims against the club Reports were received from the Fourth of July committee announcing the com pletion of modest plans and arrange ments for the coming Fourth The census committee reported failure of plans to take a census by city aid and the club determined to have a census taken and to guarantee the financing of the same The sewer question was raised by the circulation of a petition for the forma tion of a sewer district embracing the entire city as platted by the engineer in charge of that work Many of those present signed the petition Reference was made to the quite un animous result of the school bond elec tion of Tuesday Only regret was that a larger vote was not cast J E Kelley local agent for the Lin coln Land Co announced that he had information from President Morrill of the company that the deed for the city park was being prepared for presenta tion to the city of McCook as promised which was a source of much satisfac tion to the club insomuch that the secretary of the club was instructed by vote to write the thanks and appreciation of the club to the company The question of the vacation of the road leading from the city to the middle river bridge was injected into the pro ceedings and resulted in considerable discussion but no action The president of the club was authorized to appoint five members as a committee to confer with Supt Eaton over the matter Mr Lewis of the traffic department of the Burlington being in the city was introduced to the membership by Agent Scott of the company Opening of Reservation The Crow Indian reservation com prising 1000000 acres just south of Billings will be open for settlement in June Registration will commence At Sheridan Billings and Miles City June 14th and close June 28th Drawing to determine order in which selection of land may be made will be held at Bill ings commencing July 2nd The value of an 80 acre irrigated farm in that locality is at least 5000 an acre or 400000 35000 acres will be put under irrigation at once under the government plan which is to day nearly finished 100000 acres can be splendid ly irrigated from Big Horn River The Crow Agency is one of the most magnificent tracts of land in the country which is falling as a prize to the people of the west a very large area of land will be drawn for in tracts of probably 80 acres possibly 160 acres The number of prizes to be drawn for is therefore very large and the chances are all the greater for any one individual getting one of these rich prizes The round trip rate from McCook to Sheridan or Billings will be 2000 Cash Received on Account Charge Paid Out and other cash register printed supplies at The Tribune office The Middle River Bridge Road i By reference to the proceedings of the meeting of the city council held on Mou day evening of this week it will be seen that the middle river bridge road ques tion hns reached an important and urgent stage The company on that date went before the council and for mally asked for the vacation of the road leading from the foot of Manhattan street to South McCook alleging among other matters that the city has net now and never has had any right in the premises other than those given by per mission and sufferance of the company The Tribune believes the record will show however that the ruad in question was laid out iu 1883 and that it has been used for almost a quarter of a cen tury is known by present residents of McCook So that some rights have been acquired in that way as well as in legal and formal ways by the county However if the city has no rights and the way in question isa county road as the record shows it seems to The Tri bune that it is superfluous to apply to the city officials for its vacation and that the proper place is to go before the county commissioners who if any have jurisdiction in the matter But this is by the side of the main issue to the people The peaple want the road kept opeft either by subway or by viaduct The company wants to ex tend its yard trackage over the present road If they do this and there is no doubt it will be done in the near future the road will be dangerous to traffic by the people So it is necessary to either close the road or to excavate a subway or construct a viaduct Either the sub way or viaduct carry with it the question of drainage and especially is this true of the more desirable method the subway A proper subway would settle the question right and for all time But this raises the grave ques tion of finance which seems to be the great obstacle in the way But notwithstanding the obstacles in the way it is up to the city or county officials or to both as well as to the people of McCook and to those in South McCook and south of the river to see that every possible effort is made by them to secure the most favorable set tlement they can of the question Either the subway or the viaduct at the present road and crossing is pre ferable to the viaduct proposed at the ice house crossing and the opening of a crossing south of East McCook between ahalf and a quarter of a mile east of the present road4 It seems to be a question of finance largely The Tribune hopes he people and the company can strike a harmonious arrangement and that the present road may be held and that at the same time the company shall secure the enlargement of its yard facilities demanded by the increase of their busi ness at this point NORTH SIDE Bert Wales says his old farm was sold again last week Mr and Mrs Wales are up west looking for a farm A very nice little
