N INDIAN LEGEND
Tiu Grandfather of All Jlumjnltoeh
nnd III Giant DeNcumluntx
There are pretty big mosquitoes In
the world but If report be true they
have greatly degenerated in size and
strength since the days when this leg
end was believed by many tribes of
Indians
The grandfather of all mosquitoes
lived in tho neighborhood of Onondaga
N Y When he grew hungry he would
sally forth and eat au Indian or two
und pick his teeth with their ribs The
Indians had no arms that would pre
vail against this monster so they call
ed upon the holder of heavens to come
down Finding that he had met his
match in this person the mosquito Hew
away lie flew around the great lake
turned eastward sought help from the
witches that inhabited the Green lake
and had reached Lake Onondaga when
his pursuer came up and killed him
As his blood poured forth on the
sand each drop became a smaller mos
quito They gathered about the hold
er of the heavens and stung him so
cruelly that he half repented the serv
ice he had rendered to the Indians
The Tuscaroras say that two of the
mosquitoes stood on opposite sides of
the Seneca river and slew all who
passed Hiawatha killed them A res
ervation stoue marks the place wheifi
the holder rested during his chase and
tracks were until lately seen south of
Syracuse alternated with the footprints
of the mosquito These footprints were
shaped like those of a bird and were
twenty inches long These marks were
revered by the Indians for many years

THE GOLD STANDARD
England In 1S1U Was the First of
the Nation to Adopt It
The first nation to adopt the gold
standard was England She adopted
the gold standard nominally in 1S1G
but practically not until three years
later for in 1816 England was on the
paper basis Germany which adopted
the single silver standard in 1857 took
steps toward the establishment of the
gold standard in 1ST1 but it was not
until July 1873 that she demonetized
silver undertook to melt down her sil
ver coin sell it for gold and establish
the single gold standard The Scandi
navian nations adopted the single gold
standard at the same time In Septem
ber 1873 France restricted the free
coinage of silver and three years later
entirely suspended such coinage but
has never undertaken to discard the
silver coin she has in use or to treat it
otherwise than as ou an equality with
gold The action of France in restrict
ing and then suspending the coinage
of silver on private account was fol
lowed by the other nations of the Latin
union Belgium Switzerland Italy and
Greece and Spain suspended the coin
age of silver in 1878 Holland which
had established the single silver stand
ard in place of the bimetallic standard
in 1S47 suspended the coinage of silver
in 1872 and opened her mints to the
coinage of gold on private account in
1877 Watsons Magazine
Echoes From Horses Skulls
Those curious twists and turns super
stitions take are to be found in the in
troduction of horses skulls in or about
the church buildings in England and
Scotland the reason alleged being to
help the sound in church This habit is
unquestionably a relic of heathenism
where an animal was sacrificed Some
years ago when an old meeting house
In Edinburgh was pulled down the
sounding board space above the pulpit
was found to be filled with horses
skulls In some parts of England there
still exists the idea that if a horses
head Is buried in a field there will be
an echo
Success In Society
The secret of success in society is a
certain heartiness and sympathy A
man who is not happy in company can
not find any word in his memory that
will fit the occasion All his informa
tion Is a little impertinent A man
who Is happy there finds in every turn
of the conversation occasions for the
introduction of what he has to say
The favorites of society are able men
and of more spirit than wit who have
no uncomfortable egotism but who ex
actly fill the liour and company con
tented and contenting Emerson
An Artists Whim
In the church of Tasow in the gov
ernment of Kursk Russia the altar
piece is a painting of the last judg
ment the foreground being a vivid
representation of hell Among the fig
ures of lost souls a prominent position
is occupied by Tolstoi whose portrait
presents a fairly good likeness The
painters name is unknown but that
his work is appreciated is shown by
the fact that the town authorities paid
123 for the picture

Ring Leopold
Of Belgium
EYERAi undertakings in which
ho Is engaged have brought tho
naiiie of King Leopold of Bel
gium under discussion For a
small country Belgium assumes quite
a large place In international affairs
It has equipped polar expeditious
which have been successful In bring
ing back valuable scientific data per
taining to the far north and the far
south Its ruler is practically the abso
lutemonarch of the Kongo Free State
and he is engaged in commercial en
terprises which give him a place as a
captain of Industry as well as a sov
ereign The leadership in matters of
exploration which Belgium has taken
has prompted King Leopold to extend
au invitation in Its name to the arctic
explorers of the world to form a com
munity of interests a sort of polar
trust by means of which the results
of their explorations may be classified
and made known to the world in the
most advantageous manner Through
this plan it is expected that arctic and
antarctic explorers will act in concord
and receive more liberal support
In this phase of his character Leo
pold ofBelgum appears iu the light of
a patron of science In others he poses
as a patron of art and literature But
in some departments of his activity
the king of the Belgians appears in a
less favorable light His fondness for
certain favorites of the theatrical
world is notorious and lie Is known to
speud money freely in gratification of
the whims of stage beauties who
chance to please his fancy It is an
open secret that the conduct of the
gray whiskered monarch in the com
pany of these friends does not always
comport with the dignity of his throne
But there is another aspect of the
case of King Leopold that Is even more
serious The most shocking allegations
are made concerning his rule of the
KING LEOPOLD OP BELGIUM
Kongo Free State According to these
statements the name of this African
country is most ill chosen for its in
habitants are said to be the chattels
of a despot who traffics in their blood
with a cold Indifference more becoming
a Nero than a ruler of this enlightened
age The subject of the alleged atroci
ties in the Kongo is now under investi
gation The inquiry instituted by the
Belgian government itself brought out
such damaging facts that the immedi
ate representative of the king a man
who it is stated had but carried out
his masters commands committed sui
cide as soou as he learned what the
report was to be Great Britain has
taken up the matter and it Is believed
that the acts of King Leopolds agents
in that part of Africa will be exposed
shortly to the full light of publicity
Leopold has been described as a mon
arch more interested in commerce than
in kingship He is always on the look-
out for paying schemes works einl
generally rises at G oclock and before
10 has transacted a fairly good days
work As monarch of the Belgians his
powers are much circumscribed No
act of his can have any effect unless
countersigned by one of his ministers
and for whatever the king does his
ministers are responsible He is very
democratic in his habits and often
mingles in crowds without his identity
being discovered In Paris however
the striking figuie of this ruler is j
pretty well known The king once
grew quite indignant because Tod
Sloane the American jockey refused
to accept some fried potatoes in a
French restaurant Then the same
portion was promptly placed in front
df the king who discovered that they
had been cooked in rancid butter But
I ate them he said as I thought It
would injure the business of the place
if I sent them away again Which
shows he added that a Jockey can
afford to be more particular than a
king

SEX IN HANDWRITING
An Interesting Little Experiment to
Prove u Theory
It Is a curious fact that one of the
only things which even an expert
graphologist does not guarantee to dis
cover In handwriting Is the sex of the
writer We are accustomed to think
that tho feminine or masculine tem
perament will readily betray Itself In
the written word but in the majority
of cases such Is not the case
Writing bold black and firm most
masculine appearing in every way will
frequently be found to emanate from
the pen of a woman while delicate
tracery with the regularity suggestive
of precision and method or the dash
and spontaneity which Indicate a live
ly fancy almost unmistakably femi
nine one says on examination Is discov
ered to belong to a writer of the oppo
site sex
An Interesting little experiment prov
ing tills theory can be made in this
way Take twelve or twenty envel
opes written In chirographics you are
sure of and number each scrap clear
ly Pass them around and see how
I many of your friends will correctly
guess the sex of the different writers
which may bo written down and
bered like the envelopes It will
dom prove that more than one third of
j tho guesses at most are correct Ex-

CAPTAIN KIDD
The Career und the Kmllnjr of the
Famous Pirate
Captain Kidd the famous pirate
started his career with the Intention of
suppressing piracy In February 1G07
he left the Hudson in the Adventure
Galley with a crew of 150 men with
this intention This expedition had been
equipped chiefly at the expense of the
Whig ministers and Its commander
carried with him besides the ordinary
letters of marque a commission under
the great seal empowering him to seize
pirates and to take them to some place
where they might be dealt with ac
cording to law
The kings right to the goods found
in possession of these malefactors was
granted by letters patent to the sup
porters of the expedition his majesty
securing only one tenth of the spoil
Kidd however soon finding that little
was to be gained by the adventure
threw off all disguise and hoisted the
Jolly Roger
His rapacity and cruelty were un
bounded and in less than two years he
amassed the sum of 200000 With
this he thought to make his peace with
the authorities and end his days in lux
ury but he was arrested at New York
and brought to England where he was
tried and hanged at Execution dock in

Prince Napoleon
Trince Napoleon in 1870 was some
thing of a prophet When he heard of
the emperors declaration of war he
hurried to St Cloud and had a stormy
Interview with the emperor He didnt
hesitate to say It is the emperor who
has brought this upon us and the em
peror while offended at his frankness
admitted that your presentiments per
haps correspond with mine Then the
prince fired his last shot and showed
that though he might go astray in
many things he knew of the weakness
of France and the strength of Ger
many He turned on his heel and with
that bitterness which he didnt hesitate
to exhibit when occasion required said
So be it so be it Let us however
make haste to pack our possessions for
we are already beaten And so the
result proved
The Saltiest of the Salt Seas
Some Idea of the saltness of the wa
ters of the Dead sea may be gained
from the comparison made below The
Dead sea is situated in Palestine 20
miles east of Jerusalem It is 35 miles
long and from 10 to 13 miles wide with
an average depth of 20 fathoms 120
feet Common ocean water contains
but 30 parts of salt to the 1000 Those
of the Dead sea contain 230 parts to the
1000 which makes the briny solution
exactly one fourth salt
The Calihar Bean
The famous Calabar bean is said to
be worse than strychnine The natives
use It for an ordeal If a person is ac
cused of a crime he is made to eat one
being adjudged to be guilty in case of
death which is almost inevitable An
other seed employed for a like purpose
Is that of the ordeal tree of Madagas
car said to be the most deadly of vege
table products One of these seeds
about the sie of an almond will kill
twenty men
Curly Hair
Curly hair is a constitutional hered
itary phenomenon The curly hair curls
because it is flat Straight hair is cylin

Cutting has no effect as the cause of
the flatness lies in the shape of the fol
