v N -1 a TWENTY FOURTH YEAR DENTAL ANNOUNCEMENT After an enforced absence of two months abroad Dr Herbert J Pratt now takes pleasure in informing his patients and friends that he has returned and is ready to resume his professional duties at his office upstairs over McConnells drug- store Dr Pratt further announces that during his limited stay in London England he took the rare opportunity of at tending at several of the best known medical and dentalhospitalschief among them being the Royal Dental Hospital of London He was thus enabled to take up a series of lectures and prac tical demonstrations under able teachers in certain branches of dentistry hith erto not practiced in this section of the state conse quently he will shortly make some important up-to-date additions to his al ready modern outfit which will give him an equipment second to none in South western Nebraska Reception to Pastor and Wife The members of the Congregational church tendered their new pastor and wife Rev and Mrs George B Hawkes a reception of happy particulars Friday evening of past week a goodly com pany attending and meeting them with kindly greeting and welcome Mrs E J Mitchell greeted the com pany and introduced them to the receiv ing line which was augmented by the presence of Mr and Mrs R D Rod gers Mr and Mrs W E Heffelbower and Mrs M A Northrup A decidedly worthful program was rendered during the earlier part of the evening There was a piano solo by Miss Lillie Campbell vocal solo by Mr Eoswell Culter recitation by Miss Bessie Bosworth piano duet by Miss Edna M Barr and Miss Ruth Wiehe a solo by Miss Ruth Wiehe violin and piano duet by Miss Hazel Hare and Miss Edna M Barr violin solo by Miss Hazel Hare vocal solo by Mrs C W Britt After the program light dainty re freshments were served in the east room of the church The church was very attractively dec orated for the occasion colored electric lights adding a pretty detail to the pul pit platform decorations Red Willow County Fair The premium lists for the Red Willow county agricultural societys twenty fourth annual fair are now ready for distribution Write the secretary J W Dutcher at Indianola for a copv The dates are September 26 27 28 29 The county commissioners at their meeting last Friday morning decided the protest in favor of the agricultural society which will receive its financial assistance from the county as usual this year and the officers are now at work with a will to make the meeting in September a success The proper observance ofjCarnival Week is easier if there is a with some stock interests in this section Mr and Mrs R L Clyde and her sister Miss Pettit returned Sunday morning from their Colorado visit Mr and Mrs Sam Pickard and the children were up from Havelock over Sunday guests in the Fuller home Mrs J G Schobel and Marjory are visiting Denver relatives Mr Schobel spent Saturday and Sunday last with them Frank Vahue of Allegan Mich ar rived in the city close of last week on matters of business which held him a few days Miss C Lou Janes of the Nebraska Childrens Home Society has been in the city part of the week on work of the society Mrs A J Jackson after a visit of a few weeks with W O Marshall and family has gone to La Crosse Kas to visit a daughter Mrs N E Fahnestock departed Monday evening for Staunton Illi nois to be absent several months on a visit to relatives and friends Sheridan Clyde of El wood Indiana was in the city Sunday and Monday visiting members of the family on his way home from attending the great Eagles meeting in Denver last week Mrs W B Mills Mrs A L Know land Mrs G R Snyder and Mrs J E Kelley took in the Holdrege festival Wednesday Mrs Kelley acted as one of the flower parade judges Marion Powell of Lincoln was in the citySunday eveningbetween trains on his way home from a business visit to Red Willow county to see his large interests in this section Joe Harrison J W Dutcher N J TJerling and other Indianolaites ap peared before the county commissioners last Friday morning and successfully presented the case of the agricultural society in its application for the usual county financial assistance A protest had been filled against its allowance Miss Grace E Smith of our city is entertaining her friend Miss Grace E Smith of Media 111 These young ladies are notrelated but were brought togeth er in a peculiar manner by a communi cation written to the Bay Window of theSundaySchool Advocateeleven years ago which came to the notice of the other and a correspondence followed A friendship was formed and a desire to see each other increased until Miss Grace visited her correspondent at her home in 111 two years ago Miss Smith of 111 is now returning the visit which is mutually enjoyed r August 28 and continue until Saturday night September 2 In the line of pleasure the Parker Amusement Co will be the feature and that is the same as announcing on author ity that there will be something doing in the entertainment r line all the time day and night The Live Stock and Agricultural Exhibit will occupy spe cial place Monday and Tuesday August 28 and 29 The Woodmen will be at the center and frout of the stage on Thursday August 31 with their Second Annual Log Roiling contest Friday September 1 will be Traveling Mens Day with the Flower Parade a good second Saturday will be McCook Day and will close the Carnival in a blaze of glory so to speak The stock pens and agricultural display buildings have already been constructed the decorations are up the streets wired for the played in the afternoon and at times not to conflict with the other attractions of the carnival The Sheridan Cowboys are admitted to be among the swiftest base ball 1 players in the northwest August 23rd made the following nomi nations to fill the several offices Ben G Gossard County Treasurer E J Wilcox County Clerk J C Moore County Judge H I Peterson Sheriff Flora B Quick County Supt Dr J B Hare Coroner James Williams Surveyor F S Lofton Commissioner 1st Dist C B Gray Commissioner 3rd Dist The convention met shortly after ono oclock and was called to order by Lon Cone the chairman of the Republican central committee After the reading of the call by C B Gray the secretary the names of Phillip Gliem and Lon Cone were presented for the position of permanent chairman Upon Mr Cones declination to permit his name to go before the convention Phillip Gliem became chairman by the unanimous voice of the members S R Smith of Indianola and C W Barnes of McCook were nominated to fill the offices of sec retaries and were the choice of the con vention for those positions There be ing no contesting delegations the report of the committee on credentials was dis pended with The chairman being authorized to se lect a committee of three to suggest the names of persons who should act as del egates to the state convention named J E Kelley E E Devoe and W A McCool and instructed them to report after the other business of the conven tion was finished Ben G Gossard and E J Wilcox were nominated by acclamation and with great enthusiasm for the offices of treasurer and clerk respectfully and each responded to the demands for a speech briefly thanking the members for the nomination and pledging them selves to a faithful performance of their official duties The first office on the list for which two contestants appeared was that of county judge J C Moore of Tyrone precinct was nominated by his constit uents while Indianola presented a can didate in the person of J E Ryan The ballot resulted in a vote of 88 to 43 in favor of the former H I Peterson of Gran t precinct and D C Baker of North Valley precinct were placed in nomination for the office of sheriff Peterson secured the nomi nation by a vote of 107 to 32 The only real conflict came when the office of county superintendent was reached The presentation of the name of Miss Flora B Quick the pre sent incumbent for nomination was the provocation for more oratory than all the other questions that arose Miss Quicks nomination was eloquently advocated by several delegates while another element in the convention be ieved that in the absence of a Repub lican candidate for that office the place should be left blank on the ticket A motion to table the nomination was lost by a narrow margin of four votes and thereupon Miss Quick was nomi nated by acclamation for the position Dr J B Hare of McCook was nomi nated without opposition for the im portant office of coroner A spirited contest developed for the office of surveyor James Williams and Jacob Korb both of Bondville precinct being candidates for that position The ballot resulted in the selection of Wil liams by a vote of 70 to 67J4 On the informal ballot taken by the delegates from the precincts constituting the 1st commissioners district the names of four candidates were pre sented F S Lofton W S Fitch W T Henton and Henry B Colling On the formal ballot Fitch and Colling I withdrew and the nomination went to Lofton by a vote of 22 to 21 C B Gray had no opposition for nomination to the commissionership of the 3rd district to fill the unexpired term occasioned by the resignation of J H Bennett The committee appointed to select representatives to the state convention named the following delegation Phillip Gliem J E Ryan W S Morlan C E Eldred W R Starr J R McCarl Charles Skalla C M Malone R W Devoe W B MacKechnei Charles Skalla was made chairman of the county central committee with authority to select the secretary and the central committee was empowered to fill all vacancies that may occur on the ticket and on the committee The members of the county central committee as announced by the several delegations are as
