A Worlhful Lecture
Chancellor Henry A Buchtel of the
University of Denver delighted a small
but very appreciative audience in tho
Methodist church Thursday evening
in his splendid lecture on The Pleasant
ness of American Life given by the
chancellor under auspices of the lecture
committee of the Brotherhood of St
Paul There can be but one regret that
the attendance was not much largernot
withstanding the weather was unfavor
able
The chancellor contrasted American
life with the best of European life to
tho infinite advantage of existence un
der the stars and stripes for the average
man the great common people men
tioning such points of advantage in
America as civil and religious liberty
genuine social equality an abounding
sense and appreciation of humor match
less resources comparative absence of
pauperism and numerous other items in
favor of American life which place
America in a class by itself as the pleas
antest place for thej average man to live
in among all the counties known to his
tory You felt satisfied and proud to be
an American after the chancellor finish

Seventy two Miles an Hour
The Denver Times gives the following
account of a regular passenger trains
performance on the Burlington one day
last week
Seventy two miles an hour That is
tho speed attained several timis on the
Burlington eabt of McCook by the Chi
cago Denver train that arrived this
morning
The train was nearly an hour late out
of Omaha It lost a quarter of an hour
between Omaha and Hastings but after
leaving Hastings it began to mako up
time There were spurts when the
schedulo was kept up
for four or five minutes and for an hour
the average was a fraction over sixty
miles an hour
West of McCook fifty miles an hour
was kept for long distances and forty
miles an hour was too common to notice
The schedule itself is fast but tho engi
neers crowded on the steam so that the
train was ouly twenty minutes late into
Denver It would have been here en
the dot had it not been for tho storm
which caused slippery tracks
