Tho meetings of Sunday afternoon and

at tho ovening session especially a laree
hearing
In the afternoon Mrs Wheelock ad

Sunday evening tho session was a
union of tho several churches of the city
whose regular services were given up
and merged into this temperance effort
Tho Methodist church was crowded on

livered an effective address showing
3ods way of doing things to be essenti
ally different frort mens and touching
upon the history and progress and per
formances of the W T C U and many
noble and lasting results are to be cred
ited to tho grand and unselfish women
who for almost two score years have
worked For God and Home and Native
Xiand in tho cause of temperance
After the address a collection of quite
liberal sum was taken up for the benefit
of tho state organization Several ladies
-of the local union passed through the

cruits to the ranks of the union as well
as a fow honorary members from among

The meeting showed that McCook is
not by any means devoid of healthy tem

The OldNoren Dwelling Burned
Thursday night about eleven oclock
the old G A Noren residence at corner
of Madison and Dodge streets was prac
tically destroyed by fire When discov
ered the entire roof was afire and when
the fire department arrived on tho scene
there was little to be hoped for but to con
fine the flames to the burning building
and to save the contents which was
done
The dwelling was occupied by Chester
L Walker foreman of the Burlingtons
paint gang His goods were for the
most part removed from the burning
building and his loss will be confined
to breakage and damage in moving
The house was owned by C BSawyer
and was valued at 1200 There is
900 insurance on same The loss is
practically a total one as tho salvage
will not much more than clear the prop
erty of debris
The theory of the origin of the fire
that appears to be most tenable is spon
taneous combustion

Dwelling and Contents Destroyed
The dwelling house at tho corner of
McDowell and Dudley streets formerly
owned by Charles McCurdy but now
the property of Frank Castle of Norca
tur Kansas was destroyed by firoabout
two oclock Thursday morning together
with all its contents Mrs E M Blair
was occupying tho houso at tho time
and upon her falls the entire loss of al
her household effects Mrs Blair is out
of the city having gone up to Stev
ens in Frontier county close of last
week The houso was valued at S1000
but we are unable to ascertain whother
or not same is insured Tho loss on
household goods will reach 81000 and
there is the same question of doubt as
to insurance A piano was burned to
gether with a house well furnished in
every respect indeed this los3 may be
quite as large as upon tho houso
The neighbors were awakened by the
reflection of tho light from tho burning
building and an alarm was sent in By
the time the department arrived on the
scene they were delayed by lack of
sufficient members to haul tho cart
through the mud tho building was
past hope of saving And in addition
the water pressure is said to havo been
weak not sufficient to throw a stream
over the one story house
The fire was probably of incendiary
origin and there is ground for suspicion
that robbery was connected with the
fire but as both owner of the house and
renter are absent from the city it is not
easy to get the facts in tho case
Later The local agent informs us
that the household goods were insured
in the Royal of London for 81000
