TWENTY THIRD YEAR

An April Fool Wedding-
About two weeks ago cards were sent
out announcing the approaching mar
riage of Miss Ulara L Smith of McCook
and Mr B L Coffey of Stamford to be
solemnized at the residence of the brides
-sister Mrs Chester Walker on Saturday
evening April 1st 1905 In answer to
the invitations quite a number gathered
to witness the happy event The rooms
were lavishly decorated with flowers of
various hinds smilax and beauty roses
being used most profusely A bountiful
two course supper had been prepared
and was temptingly displayed upon the
table in the dining room which was also
tastefully decorated for the occasion In
the parlor one side was fitted up with a
beautiful arch composed of smilax and
long streams of white satin ribbon while
overhead hung a wedding bell The
wedding march was played while the
tfride and groom entered and took their
stand in the place designated for them
when Rev Carman of the M E church
stepped forward while everyone was
wondering if the bride would be nervous
and read from a document ho held in
his band the marriage certificate of Mr
and Mrs Coffey who had been married
almost two weeks then turning around
very gracefully introduced them to the
company As soon as the guests had
somewhat recovered from their surprise
and had come to realize that they had
leen the victims of an April first joke
they gave their congratulations and alj
-went merry under the marriage bell
It was a complete surprise to the friends
on both sides no one knowing anything
about it but the officiating minister E
E Crippen at Benkelman and the wit
nesses who were bound to secrecy The
young couple will live near Stamford
where the groom is a successful farmer

tiful presents from their friends as
tokens of their worthiness

The City Council in Session
The city council was in session April
1st with a full representation of the
board

Independent Telephone Co ordinance
was read and referred to the committee
on ordinances
In the ordinance above referred to the
McCook Independent Telephone Co of
fers to build a plant in McCook either
automatic or central energy to cost
about 15000 with underground con
duits for wires within the business dis
trict and will instal and supply the
schools city hall and free library with
free service and will pay to the city an
nually one per cent of the net earnings
of the plant or if preferred by the city
will agree to keep the plant in good re
pair and at the end of 25 years turn the
plant over to the city free of charge
Phone rates to be 125 per month for
residences and 250 for business places
The mayor appointed Rev J J Lough
ran a member of the library board to
fill a vacancy
A sidewalk resolution was passed

The basket supper and entertainment
by the Prospect Park and Anderson
schools last Friday night was a marked
success notwithstanding the rainy weath
er reduced the attendance considerably

A Great Teacher Gathering
The second ccnsecutive annual meet
ing of the Southwest Nebraska District
Teachers association held in McCcok
closed a two days session Saturday
evening with Montavillo Flowers in
The Merchant of Venice in what was
practically an ovation to that talented
and popular gentleman
The association embraces Phelps Har
lan Gosper Frontier Furnas Red Wil
lowIIitchcock HayesChaseand Dundy
counties and from these ten counties
there were present exceeding five hun
dred teachers and friends of education
one of the greatest gatherings of the sort
ever hold in this section of Nebraska
And as this is the second consecutive
time the association has met in McCook
its pride is excusable at the result which
marks McCook as an educational center
Besides the splendid program there
were two at least marked and special
features worthy of note in addition
namely the music and evening entertain
ments The music of the several ses
sions was a monument to the talent of
the teacher corps of the McCook city
schools and consisted of choruses quar
tettes trio duets and solos and instru
mental numbers of a most creditable
character and were all the outgrowth
of the music work of the school
The evening entertainments crowded
he new Methodist church to the doors
Friday evening Rev E M Evans of
Hastings gave Old Mexico to the sat
isfaction and instruction of all filling
for Dr Phil Baird who failed to appear
A splendid music program by the teach
ers and other talented musicians and
a reception to the visiting teachers filled
the evening to the brim
