Death Finally Claimed Her
After making a cheerful and valiant
fight against the grim reaper for several
years death finally claimed Mrs Albert
W Utter Thursday afternoon at 130
oclock at the home of her son Daniel W
Colson Funeral services will be held
at the Colson residence tomorrow after
noon at 300 oclock Interment will be
made in Riverview cemetery Tho de
parted has been a resident of McCook
for many years and her death will touch
many hearts outside tho immediate
family
Mrs Ellen E Utter was an accom
plished and brilliant women in her day
a musician and vocalist of splendid
ability a woman of high attainment and
character Wo hope next week to be
able to give adequate expression of her
death

Followed The Water
Certain porsons at North Platte have
beeu stealing and butchering cattlo and
the authorities finally got onto tl o gang
and corraled them in a house in that
neighborhood One of the three men
escaped and mado his way on horseback
south to Hayes Center Culbertson and
thence headed for Kansas Monday
morning a few miles south of Culbert
son the sheriff of Hayes county arrest
ed tho fleeing thief and brought him
back to Culbortson from which point
ho telegraphed the sheriff at North
Platte to come to Hayes Center after his
prisoner The Hayes county sherili
arrived at his home Monday evening
Ho allowed the prisioner to take off his
coat and hat and wash The prisioner
went to tho door to throw out tho dirty
water and forgot to come back To our
knowledge he has not vet been found
Tho sheriff of Lincoln county was in Mc
Cook Tuesday night on his way home
without the prisioner of course
To Increase Facilities
In order to increase facilities and avoid
delays as far as possible tho telegraph
office at this place is to be overhauled
and tho old fixtures roplaced by larger
ones Wire No 3 will be quadruplexod
through to Denver thus doubling the
capacity of the local office which now has
but one quad By- this quadrupling
operation different operators can send or
receive dispatches at the same time over
the same wire A new wire will be con
nected up through to Denver at Brush
A number of new operating tables will
be put in and the service improved
greatly from every material aspoct As
perhaps 300 messages are received and
sent at this office every day the impor
tance of these improvements will be ap
preciated
Receipts Will Not Warrant Uptown Office
Manager Heber of the Western Union
says he would be only too delighted to
give the people of McCook an uptown
office if the receipts of tho office in this
city warranted any such expenditure
He states however that they are entirely
too low to admit of such an expense
beinc on an average only a little above
S100 per month when to secure an up
town office perhaps the receipts would
have to reach two or three times that
sum While the increased convenience
and privacy and the better service of an
uptown office would doubtless increase
the receipts in a measure it is highly
improbable that they will in many years
reach the point named by the local man

Entertained The Old Soldiers
The members of the Ladies Circle en
tertained the old soldiers over the Model
shoo store last Friday af tornoon A big
feast was spread and the occasion wa
greatly enjoyed There was to have been
a joint installation of the officers of the
post and circle but this had to be post
poned until next Thursday on account
of the post failing to receive its necessary
dispensation for that event

Obituary
Helen M wife of T C Jones former
ly Helen M Shattuck died Dec 29th
1901 She was born in Huron countv
Ohio April 29th 183G moved to Illinois
with her parents while yot a small child
Sho was mairied to T C Jones on tho
21st day of January 1850 at Kingston
Illinois Sho then moved with her hus
band in the spring of 18G5 to Adair
county Iowa and in 1881 came to Web
ster county Nebraska and came to Red
Willow county Nebraska in 1881 Four
childred were born to this union two
boys who died in infancy and two girls
who still live in Nebraska The funeral
services were conducted at her home two
miles west and seven miles south of Cam
bridge by Rev L J Keene at 11 a m
Dec 31 1905 and sho was laid to rest in
the Tyrone cemetery leaving her hus
band and two daughters to mourn her

Mortuary
Charlie Berry a brother of the Berrys
of our city died in a hospital in Min
neapolis Minn last Saturday morning
Funeral services were held in Minneap
olis Sunday afternoon after which the
remains were taken to Virginia Illinois
where they were on Monday interred in
the family burial lot George Berry ac
companied the remains to Virginia re
turning to Minneapolis Tuesday He is
expected to arrive home tomorrow Miss
Racho is visiting in Red Oak Iowa on
her way home and is expected to arrive
some time next week Mrs Charlie
Berry and four children will come to Mc
Cook to reside as soon as her affairs are
clrsed up at Minneapolis She is a niece
of L C Stephenson who was in the early
days superintendent of McCooks city
schools and deputy county clerk under

Death of P E Potters Sister
The Rockford Register of January 5th
contains this brief account of the death
of a sister of P E Potter of our city
who with his wife aro now in Rockford

Lake who has been hovering between
life and death for several weeks past
was relieved from suffering early Tues
day morning The remains were brought
hero for burial last evening being ac
companied by Mr Allen and daughter

of Clear Lake The funeral was held
from the home of R MPotter a brother

Wednesday night in Stratton after a
long illness DrA J Thomas well known
to all old residents of McCook as ono of
the early dentists of the city passed
away The remains were brought to
McCook for burial Services were held
in the Congregational church this after
noon at two oclock conducted by Rev
Conrad burial following in Riverview
cemetery The services were in charge
of McCook lodge No 42 Knights of Py
thias with which the deceased was as
sociated in life The order true to its
tenets ministered unto the departed
brother during his illness
For years the doctor practiced his pro
fession successfully in our city where
he made his home with his wife and two
sons who have the deep sympathy of all
in this sorrow and bereavement

Nebraska has been enduring a vigor
ous touch of real winter this week The

out the errors that men fall into draining
their land and gives directions for the
location of drains so that water is re
moved with the least po sible outlay for

given to adequate outlets and to the lo
cation of drains in draws and sloughs
