Closed With a Rousing Meeting
Congressman Norris closed his cam
paign in the fifth district Monday even
ing with a rousing meeting in the Me
nard opera house this city Secretary
of State elect Red Cloud was
in the city and made a few remarks in
opening after which Chairman Berry
introduced the congressman our fellow
townsman and citizen who delivered an
eloquent and telling speech of quite two
hours duration dwelling at length upon
the great and dominant feature of Re
publicanism the tariff giving specific
attention to the tin plate industry as de
veloped by the Republican partys pro
tective tariff policy It was a splendid
speech a clear exposition of the Re
publican partys position on that great
question and was throughout received
with every evidence of appreciation and
with marked enthusiasm
The glee club injected a delightful
musical element into the meeting and
were recalled
It was a befitting and gratifying end
ing to a satisfactory and successful cam
paign
Greeted by a Large Audience
The concert in the Congregational I
church last Fridav eveninc drew
well filled church The program includ
ed a number of McCooks best known
musicians and their efforts were appre
ciated fully It is a pleasure to be able
to note the fact that the music was of
high grade and that it was in each in
stance well handled by the amateur tal
ent represented The program was for
the benefit of the music department of
the church and was under the manage
ment of the music committee The fi
nancial results were very satisfactory
Favorable to Macaroni Wheat
A number of reports favorable to
Macaroni wheat have reached this office
recently Tom Ball states that his
Macaroni wheat averaged 16 bushels per
acre the present season while his other
wheat under similar circumstances
went from 7 to 10 or an average of 8o
bushels per acre
Garrett Armstrong on the old Hol
brook farm southwest of McCook
threshed 128 bushels of Macaroni wheat
from a planting of seven bushels
These and other facts warrant the
planting of more wheat of this variety

Good For McCook
For many months there has been a
growing feeling that McCook ought to
support a first class course of entertain
ments Many endeavors have been
made by interested parties to organize a
plan whereby the people could see and
hear some of the best talent that travels
but each time the project was abandoned
because of the expense and difficulties
involved A committee of five gentle
men Messrs C II Meeker J R Mc
Carl C F Heber S B McLean and
G H Thomas have taken hold of tho
venture anew and with every Dromise of
abiding success They have affected
permanent organization and have started
the campaign with the view of bringing
to McCook four of tho best entertain
ments that money can secure Every
citizen should constitute himself a com
mittee of one to help Every club and
company of individuals owe it to them
selves and to the community to unite
and assist in this laudable enterprise
No one who closely watches the trend
of events doubts the wisdom and educat
ing value of a course of lectures and
entertainments If we do not advance
we retrograde and we need in our lives
to feel the thrill of delight that comes
from hearing beautiful music and the
eloquence of gifted speakers
On the part of the committee there is
not the slightest desire in the world of
making any money from this course of
entertainments but it is fiVTifirtofl thnt
they will close the season with a cash I

Contracts have been entered into for
four events to consist of Mr Frank R
Roberson in a stereopticon lecture on
Russia Japan November 19th The
Royal Hungarian Orchestra consisting
of ten men in a superb concert in De
cember Gen Z T Sweeney author
diplomat and lecturer in January and
the Herbert Butler Concert Company
in February As soon as it is stated that
Roberson and Sweeney are to receive
100 each the Herbert Butler Concert
Company 150 and Tho Hungarian Or
chestra 200 it at once becomes apparent
that the attractions are all of a very high
character In fact the committee be
lieves that these four represent the best
talent that can possibly be secured in a
city large or small It now asks the
people of McCook to show their pleasure
at the chance olf hearing these entertain
ments
The first need that the committee has
upon itself is to thoroughly canvass the
town for the sale of season tickets for all
four of these attractions These are to
be sold for 2 each It is expected that
the single admissions will cosfe fifty cents
each except for the Hungarian Orchestra
which will be seventy five cents When
the members of the committee call upon
you for season tickets dont fail to re
spond willingly You will have no cause
for regret or disappointment as a result
of your attending these four entertain
ments
Frank R Roberson who appears first
in the course has already lectured twice
in McCook in the past two years The
house full of friends will be delighted
with his new illustrated lecture o n
Russia Japan or The Destiny of The
Far East It will be a clear statement
of the vital interests of the present war
between Russia and Japan and is of
particular interest just at the present
time
The Royal Hungarian Orchestra jumps
from Chicago to Omaha where they re
ceive fcdUU for their engagement and
come directly here It is one of the
finest orchestras in the country The
eight men composing it together with
the soloists will certainly delight the
senses with the sweetest and most de
lightful music General Z T Sweeney
