Sustained Fracture of Left Leg
While riding homo from a neighbors
last Friday night Miss Martha Shears
was thrown from hor horse sustaining a
fracture of her left leg between her knee
and thigh The rear girth became un
loosed causing the animal to shy to
ward a barb wire fence In her efforts
to escape being cut and torn by the wire
Miss Shears was thrown to the ground
with above results The horse made its
wayhomo alone and a member of the
family at once wont forth to ascertain
the cause finding Miss Shears about a
mile from home attempting to drag her
self home in the darkness Professional
skill was summoned from McCook the
fracture reduced and Miss Shears is
progressing favorably
This family has been notably unfortu

juries a broken leg etc received several
years since by falling from a car load of
telegraph poles while ho was a line man
in the Burlington service Then Mrs
Cratty was a victim in an accident in
which she received a broken leg which
had to be rebroken in the process of
healing She is however like her hus
band still somewhat of a cripple as a
result of her accident
At the time of the daughters mishap
the mother was on her way homo from
the east where sho recently had per
formed a very delicate operation Sho

Died At His Post of Duty
This community was deeply touched
Sunday morning last upon learning of
the sudden and tragic death of Engineer
James V OConneJl the previous night
under touching aud unusual circum
stances
Deceased had been called to go on
passenger train No 14 for St Louis
and although not feeling well responded
and started out of the McCook station
on the journey Before reaching the east
yard limit however he was stricken
down with an attack of heart disease
and literally died at his post of duty
Fireman R F Lowmari backed the train
into the station and a now crew was
provided tho engine the train in due
time resuming its journey
It was not known that the departed
was afflicted with a serious heart
trouble indeed Engineer OConnell was
a retiring quiet unassuming uncom
plaining man and perhaps his nearest
and dearest had no idea of the serious
ness of bis malady although it has been
known by some that he suffered some
what with h i s heart on occasions
Hence his death under the pathetic cir
cumstances came as a stroko of light
ning from a clear sky
Engineer OConnell came to McCook
in 1888 the time of the Reading and
Burlington strikes and during the six
teen years of his residence in our city
has had the esteem of all both in and
outside of railroad circles He had the
friendship of his fellow railroad men
and stood high in the regard of his su
periors as an efficient dependable engi
neer
Ho leaves an invalid wife and nine
children most of them small They
have the deepest sympathy of this whole
community in this sudden though
peaceful death of a devoted husband
and father
The funeral was held on Thursday
morning in Si Patricks church Rev
J J Loughran conducting the solemn
requiem mass The church was crowded
with sympathizing citizens Many beau
tiful floral offerings from individuals
and orders were in charming evidence
Interment followed in the Calvary ceme
tery of this city
A sister of the deceased accompanied
the daughter Sadie home from Phila
delphia both arriving on Wednesday
and in time to attend the funeral
Deceased carried 2000 in the A O
U W and 81250 in the Burlington
Voluntary Relief
He also carried 150 in a Philadelphia
burial association

Thomas and Sarah OConnell was born
