month 160 acres of Henry Stevens 160

addition to this land he has 50 head of
cattle 14 head of horses hogschickens
equipment for farming etc to the value
of S2500 He came to Lebanon from
Filmore county in 1894 He had a few
old horses and some worn out machin
ery and money enough to build a house
and barn on school land He left in
Filmore county the 8500 first payment
on a farm and a lot of other debts the
other debts followed him out here as the
cashier of the Geneva bank was presi
dent of the bank here He told the
writer that about since five years ago the
bankers dont take the interest in his
welfare that they used to Every time
he came to town the banker would come
out shake hands with him and ask him
when he would bring in some hogs or
corn to sell This property was all dug
out of the rich Nebraska soil in ten
years
The following account of the graduat
ing exercises of the Lebanon public
schools was to have appeared last week
but did not arrive in time and is there
for presented this week though some
what tardy in its appearance The first
commencement of the Lebanon school
was held in the Methodist church Wed
nesday evening June 8th It was an
occurrence of unusual interest The
church has the largest seating capacity
of any building in the town but al
though it was thoroughly filled it was
not sufficient to hold the great number
who came to attend the graduating ex
ercises The class is composed of six
members who have been earnest and
faithful students during their entire
course and have received several great
honors for their excellent scholarship
The themes of their graduating ad
dresses were happily chosen well de
veloped and delivered in a manner that
won the hearty appreciation of their
large audience Each had well earned
the diploma then presented in behalf of
the board of education and also the
abundance of beautiful floral tributes
gracefully brought forward by two little
flower girls The intermediate and the
primary departments of the school had
previously given a joint exhibition that
was largely attended and highly ap
preciated So the school year has closed
in a pleasant way The principal Lottie
Watkins and her associated teachers are

fine one and that one Tuesday mc rning

A dozen or fifteen from this neighbor
hood were in McCook Sanday and at
tended the funeral of Mrs II C Shep
herd

township on Thursday June 5 1879
On the 12th he located on the southwest
quarter of section 34 He took the bows
off the wagon set the ends in the ground
stretched the cover over and moved in
There was no house in sight He only
saw five men up here that summer He
hauled water for his horses from the
old Garrettson farm on Red Willow
creek owned now by Wm Doyle It
was eight miles away The first Sun
day in the township he organized a
Sunday school As the nearest neigh
bor was five miles off no one was pres
ent but himself The title of the lesson
for that day which was Ju ie 15th was
Saul rejected That was the first
lesson in the first Sunday school in this
township There have been storms and
drouth and heat and cold but that
Sunday school has withstood them all
and has run summer and winter and is
going right along yet and eternity alone
will reveal the good it has done It is
now twenty five years old The first
Sunday after its birthday could well be
used as memorial birthday and chil
drens day
