PUBLIC FREE LIBRARY NOTES
Not for many months have t e maga
zines been as well worth reading as they
are for June Attention has heretofore
been called to tho Western number of
tho Century with its unique and inter
esting features
Probably the most important event of
theyear in the literary world is the an
nouncement of a new novel by Mrs
Humphrey Ward Those who care to
read novels serially will find the opening
chapters in the June number of Harpers
magazine Harpers by the way may
usually bo depended on for the quality
of its sorial fiction which almost invari
ably appear over the name of some
author of recognized achievements
Through all the years of its history
Harpers has enjoyed the enviable repu
tation of offering the best that was to bo
had Middleman The Breadwinners
Silas Lapham Trilby Judethe Obscure
as the book is now known though or-
ginally it appeared under cue title Trie
Simpletons which was afterwards chan
ged to Hearts Insurgent before it took
its present form Sir Mortimer while
Sir George Tressady and Lady Roses
Daughter by the same author as the
present serial besides a score of others
of equal or greater merit than those that
have been mentioned have from time
to time been given to the public by
Harpers
The Atlantic too is a periodical that
may be trusted for the exceptionally
good quality of its fiction In its early
years it was fortunate in having as its
editor one of the most brilliant men of
letters of this period James Russell
Lowell The Autocrat of the Breakfast
Table first saw light through the me
dium of the Atlantic Want of space
forbids a more extended mention of its
attractions but it will be recalled that
in recent times a long list of notable
productions has graced its pages The
Old Things by Henry James or asit is
now called the Spoils of Pcynton was
published serially in the Atlantic as
were two of Mary Johnstons books
while at present The Common Lot a
striking story of Chicago life by Robert
Ilerrick one of the promising authors
of tho west is presented for the enter
tainment of its readers The Atlantic
too was the first to introduce Stephen
Phillips probably the greatest of living
English speaking poets and dramatists
to American readers Josephine Pres
ton Peabody who may be called the
greatest of living American poets is a
frequent contributor to the Atlantic
The present number contains a remark
able story a Colorado episode entitled
The Stage Coach by one whom we have
a right to claim as one of ourselves
Elia W Peattie Thomas Wentworth
Higginson also has one of his delightful
essays in the issue which other features
of an attractive nature are not wanting
McClures magazine has of late de
voted considerable attention to sociologi
cal and economic problems and several
notable articles have appeared within
the last few months Miss Tarbells
Life of John D Rockafeller which has
attracted wide notice is still running
and is more interesting than fiction for
the reason that the subject of the work
is not a creature of the authors imagina
tion but the most conspicuous figure in
the financial world of today
Good Spirits
Good spirits dont all come from Ken
tucky Their main source is the liver
and all the fine spirits ever made in the
Blue Grass State could not remedy a bad
liver or the hundred-and-one ill effects it
produces You cant have good spirits
and a bad liver at the same time Your
liver must be in fine condition if you
would feel buoyant happy and hopeful
bright of eye light of step vigorous and
successful in your pursuits You can put
your liver in fine condition by using
Greens August Flower the greatest of
all medicines for the liver and stomach
and a certain cure for dyspepsia or indi
gestion It has been a favorite house
hold remedy for over thirty five years
August Flower will make your liver
healthy and active and thus insure you
a liberal supply of good spirits

Burlington Line to the Gulf
The preliminary arrangements for ex
tending the Burlington railroad from
Kansas City to the Gulf of Mexico have
progressed to a point where the final lo
cation and actual construction of the
road will soon be commenced A dis
patch from Austin Tex confirms the
statement recently made in the Star to
the effect that representatives of th
Burlington have been actively at work in
Texas for several months obtaining
bonus contracts and right-of-way
It is stated that the new line will for
a considerable distance traverse the
same territory which was to have been
covered by the Rock Islands proposed
extension to Galveston The new line
will be a grain carrying line and will be
an important factor in the transporta
