know if it were possiblo to determine by how many people euch book in the library has beon read This of courso wo cannot do but we may approximate tho number by ascertaining how many times tho book has beon called for Tho results of a hasty and superficial examination of tho facts in re gard to this feature are somewhat startlingand reveal a condition of affairs that is in somo re spects appalling Taking the books haphazard as they aro found upon tho shelves without making any ef fort to select thoso that are most or least read wo find that Daniel Derouda has been read by two people while Tho Mill on the Floss as may bo supposed is tho most popular of George Elliotts books has been called for five times Nicholas Nickolby has been out just twice Oliver Twist seems to have been read by nino ieople The others of Dickeus works vary in popularity between theso two narrow limits The Scarlet Letter tho greatest of American novels and ono of the classics seems to havo been read by but four people Coming down to more recent literature Beside tho Bonnie Brier Bush a beautiful and worthy book and one tho demand for which tho publishers were scarcely able to fill on tho occasion of its ap pearance about ten years ago has been out only threo times The Light that Failed one of Kiplings best and perhaps least offensively characteristic books of that somewhat erratic wriuir has been called for only five times Among tlio older and better books Shirley forms a notable xception having been read by 25 people Sentimental Tommy too more modern but of the same high standard of ex cellence shows a list of 28 readers many of them doubtless attracted by tho title and not by the authors name Wo must turn to the late novels if wo would find those that are popular On Satans Mount hat had 34 readers The Alamo by Opie Read 30 Hugh Wynne and Tho Little Bird each 39 Calumet K 40 The Cavalier 41 John March Southerner and When Knighthood was in Flower each 55 Red Rock 50 Audrey 59 and Dorothy Vernon Gl These books are of vary ing degrees of mediocrity and why they should bo so widely read when the library contains so much that is in every way superior is impossi ble to comprehend If tho readers taste in cliuesito the romantic lot him read Ivanhoe or Keniliorth or Rob Roy each of which books by tho way has beon out only eight times If ho prefers tho historical why there is the Tale of Two Cities or Barnaby Rudge infinitely hotter in every respect to When Knighthood was in Flower for instance which has scarcely a quality to recommend it Tho Dickens novels hold and thrill The Major story is far more likely to put tho reader to sleep if he does not throw it aside in utter disguest One should perhaps read one of Miss Johnsons books Audrey will do as well as any other if one cun read it but one is enough and if ones time is limited he had far better spend it on something else Then there is the Scarlet Letter tho one book which of all others should be known to Ameri can readers There are books by famous au thors which tho reader deserves credit for read ing The Scarlet Letter is not one of these It should interest every person with human senti ments If tho reader seeks only diversion let him read this book He will find much more in it a study of men that has not been excelled hardly equalled and the employment of the purest of pure English For whatsoever pur pose ono reads more pleasure is in almost every case to be derived from the old than from the Cone Bros Success Cone Bros the enterprising druggists rather than await the ordinary methods of introduction urged the Dr Howard Co to secure a quick sale for their cele brated specific for the cure of constipa tion and dyspepsia by offering the regu lar 50c bottle at half price The wonderful success of this plan was a great surprise even to Cone Bros and today there are scores of people here in McCook who are using and praising this remarkable remedy So much talk has been caused by this offerand so many new friends have been made for the specific that the Dr How ard Co havo authorized Druggists Cone Bros to contince this special half price sale for a limited time longer In addition to selling a 50c bottle of Dr Howards specific for 25c Cone Bros have so much faith in the remedy that they will refund the money to anyone whom it does not cure When your head aches your stomach does not digest food easily and naturally when there is constipation specks be fore the e3res tired feeling giddiness bad taste in mouthcoated tongueheart burn sour stomach roaring or ringing
