Several new steel cars are in the Bur
lington yards arriving direct from the
Pennsylvania shops They are brand
new made and turned out in November
and are apparently on their first journey
In capacity they are of 100000 pounds
being almost as large as the monster
cars used on the C O which will
contain 10000 pounds more The Q
system has but 250 of these cars in opera
tion as they are new and in the nature
of an experiment So far they have
proved successful though the test of
time has not had a chance to prove
their lasting qualities Car repairers
state that they will not need so much
done to them in the way of fixing as
the old style wooden cars but that in
time they become bent out of shape and
warped by the effect of the coal and of
the weather Those just arrived in tho
yards have patent chute rigging which
is thought will prove much superior to
the old fashioned devices for unloading

Twelve Miles In Nine Minutes
To travel 12 miles in 9 minutes is a
wonder even in these days of rapid
transit This was the rate made by
train No 1 of the Burlington road which
was due in Denver at 650 Sunday night
and arrived only 20 minutes late mak
ing up 2 hours and 5 minutes after leav
ing McCook
The train was pulled by ono of the new
Burlington battleships as the huge
new engines are called and was handled
by Engineer Bud Hardy who is
nick named the wizard of the throttle
and Uonductor J J uurran Un one
part of the road just this side of Akron
the heavy train made 12 miles in 9 min
utes nearly 80 miles an hour and a
stretch of 120 miles was covered in 110
minutes
The way of it was this Charles
Severance of Monte Vista and several
Chicago capitalists interested with him
in a big mining company were just
bound to be in Monte Vista on Monday
to attend a directors meeting Mr
Severance told Engineer Hardy he
would give him 100 if he would get him
into Denver in time for him to make
connections for Monte Vista and also
allow time for Mr Severance to go up to
the Brown hotel and secure some neces
sary documents
Hardy said he would do it if Mr
Severance could arrange with the offi
cials for a clear trackand this was done
Everything in the way was side tracked
and the big train began to pound and
leap along like some great live thing

over until next week the news of the
week from the public schools
